BYD used the opening of the Paris Motor Show to pull the wraps off the ATTO 8, a seven-seat electric SUV that becomes the first model the company has built for Europe around its in-house FLASH charging system. The vehicle carries a 115-kilowatt-hour battery that, according to company figures, can go from a 10 percent to a 97 percent state of charge in nine minutes. European buyers will have to wait: the official launch is set for the first quarter of 2027.

The unveiling sits alongside a broader product push. BYD has added the Great Tang SUV to its upper-tier lineup, opened pre-orders for the second-generation Seagull, and is bringing the Denza Z9S to market. On the battery side, the company is turning to immersion cooling to sharpen thermal management and charging speeds. The ATTO 8 itself relies on a second-generation Blade battery.

A Robot Patent, and a Bet on Embodied AI

Technology ambitions extend well past passenger cars. China's intellectual property authority, the CNIPA, has published a design patent covering an intelligent robot developed by BYD — a signal that the group is moving into embodied artificial intelligence and wants to lock down key technologies in-house.

Manufacturing muscle is expanding in parallel. On Friday, BYD's Huai'an plant rolled out its 150,000th commercial vehicle, a Q3 heavy electric truck, and management pledged heavier investment in long-haul heavy trucks going forward.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Europe in the Sights, France on the Shortlist

Talks about where to build next are advancing. Executive Vice President Stella Li told Reuters that France has landed on BYD's shortlist as it weighs a new factory, part of a plan to add two more European plants to its footprint.

The home market offers a starker picture. Industry association data show overall passenger car sales in China fell 27 percent year-on-year in September, dragged down by sluggish domestic demand.

Analysts Trim Targets as the Stock Slips

Those headwinds are showing up in broker notes. On September 29, JPMorgan downgraded BYD from Overweight to Neutral and cut its price target to 88 HK$ from 124 HK$, pointing to softer Chinese auto demand, rising input costs and persistent trade barriers. The bank kept its buy recommendation despite the reduction.

The stock finished yesterday's session down 1.8 percent at EUR 8.50, leaving it 21 percent lower since the start of the year — though still 5.8 percent above its 52-week low.

Overseas Sales Provide the Counterweight

September brought a measure of relief from abroad. BYD set a monthly record in the UK with 20,140 new registrations, taking second place in the sales rankings. Global vehicle deliveries climbed 17 percent year-on-year to 463,561 units, even as the nine-month total remained just under 4 percent below the prior year.
