BYD packed a lot into the final days of October. A global branding accolade, a land-speed record for its YANGWANG luxury marque, a fresh Qin Plus DM-i launch and quarterly results all landed within the space of a week — a burst of activity that captures both the ambition and the pressure facing China's largest electric-vehicle maker.

The company was named Automobile Brand of the Year in the global category at the World Branding Awards 2026–2027, an honour it announced on Tuesday. Days earlier, on Sunday, its YANGWANG flagship had made headlines of a different kind: the U9 Xtreme hit 503.17 km/h in Abu Dhabi, a run the FIA recognised as a record.

A New Qin for the Home Front

On the product side, BYD rolled out the third generation of the Qin Plus DM-i in China on 27 October. The model arrives in three variants, with limited-time introductory prices running from RMB 76,900 to RMB 97,900. Buyers can choose between two electric-only ranges — 140 km and 220 km. The launch is explicitly a China-market affair.

Top Line Outpaces Bottom Line

The financial headline came on 29 October. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 climbed 13.59% year on year to RMB 221.488 billion. Net profit attributable to shareholders rose 28.08% to RMB 10.020 billion — a faster rate of growth than sales, but still short of what brokerage houses had pencilled in, according to Reuters.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The picture darkens slightly over the longer stretch. For the first nine months of 2026, BYD booked a net profit of RMB 22.34 billion, down 4.24% from the same period a year earlier. Roughly a week before the earnings release, the company also disclosed impairments for January through September 2026: combined credit and asset-risk provisions of RMB 3.654 billion, including RMB 2.794 billion in inventory write-downs.

October Deliveries Defy a Soft Home Market

Volume tells a more upbeat story. Reuters noted continued weak demand in BYD's domestic market and fierce price competition, yet October sales still rose 11% year on year to 490,168 vehicles. Exports did the heavy lifting: overseas deliveries more than doubled, jumping 102.8% to 170,194 units, far outpacing the growth of the total.

That overseas momentum comes with a political complication. Fourteen members of the European Parliament have asked the European Commission to assess potential security risks posed by BYD vehicles and to examine whether restrictions would be warranted — including a possible exclusion from public procurement tenders. The request covers both a safety evaluation of the cars and the question of access to public contracts.
