BYD's Overseas Surge Can't Paper Over a Nine-Month Profit Decline

BYD moved 490,168 vehicles in October, up 11% year on year, with shipments beyond China more than doubling. Yet the same company just booked a nine-month net profit below last year's level. That split — booming volume, lagging earnings — is the crux of the debate now facing investors in the Shenzhen automaker.

A quarterly beat that still fell short

Net profit attributable to shareholders reached RMB 10.02 billion in the third quarter of 2026, a gain of 28.08% on the same period a year earlier, according to company figures. On any ordinary reading, that is a robust result.

The market, however, had priced in more. Brokerage estimates compiled by Reuters ranged from RMB 11.4 billion to RMB 12.95 billion, and revenue of RMB 221.5 billion also came in below forecasts. The shortfall, not the direction of travel, set the tone: Hong Kong-listed shares came under pressure on Friday after the release. The quarterly report was unaudited.

The nine-month picture tells a different story

Zoom out and the quarterly jump loses some of its shine. For January through September 2026, BYD posted a net profit of RMB 22.34 billion — down 4.24% from the prior-year period. A single strong quarter, in other words, has not reversed the full-year trajectory.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

That gap is precisely where a sales-only reading of BYD runs aground. Unit volumes describe the size of the business; whether they translate into convincing earnings is a separate question, and one the latest figures leave open.

Exports carry the month, but the home market drags

October's delivery growth was heavily export-driven, Reuters noted. Overseas shipments climbed 102.8% to 170,194 vehicles, providing a counterweight to a sluggish Chinese market and a bruising price war at home.

The monthly momentum also decelerated: September had delivered a 17% increase, so October's 11% gain marks a slower pace. And the broader trend remains negative — sales from January through October were running 2.16% below the prior-year level, according to media reports. A strong month, in short, has yet to become a broad-based recovery.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Fresh metal in the showroom

BYD is not standing still on product. The third generation of its Qin Plus DM-i went on sale in China on Tuesday, following the second-generation Seagull on 20 October, which brings new charging technology and optional LiDAR.

Those launches add another lever for volume alongside the export push. What they do not yet provide is evidence of a durable improvement in profitability. For now, the numbers show progress on several fronts — but not a unified picture, and the central question for investors remains whether BYD can combine sales growth, a recovery at home and higher profits at the same time.
