BYD's Overseas Push Meets a European Wall as Currency and Working Capital Squeeze Margins

More than a dozen members of the European Parliament have asked the European Commission to assess whether BYD vehicles pose security risks and to weigh possible restrictions — including barring the Chinese automaker from public procurement. The demand, reported by Reuters, lands just as BYD is leaning harder than ever on sales outside China to drive growth.

That reliance is visible in the numbers. In the third quarter of 2026, BYD sold 1,323,065 new-energy vehicles, of which 550,704 went abroad. Exports more than doubled year on year, jumping 102.8% to 170,194 units in the period covered by the latest monthly figures. Within the passenger-car mix, 305,743 units were pure battery-electric and 177,382 were plug-in hybrids.

A profit beat that still fell short

The quarterly report published roughly a week ago showed a net profit of 10 billion yuan for the third quarter, up 28% from a year earlier, on revenue of 221.5 billion yuan — a 13.6% increase. Both figures were reported by Reuters. Even so, the bottom line came in below the analyst estimates Reuters had compiled.

The year-to-date picture is less flattering: through September 2026, profit remained 4.24% below the prior-year level. Management's ability to carry the third-quarter momentum into the final months will determine whether the improvement is a turning point or a one-off.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The currency headwind nobody priced in

A stronger home currency is complicating the export story. The yuan has gained almost 5% against the US dollar since the start of the year and around 9% against the euro, according to Reuters. For a company selling abroad, that erodes pricing room and margin headroom.

At BYD the effect has already shown up in the accounts: foreign-exchange gains in the prior-year period have flipped to losses, the company said. Until operating growth is strong enough to absorb that swing, it weighs on the quality of overseas earnings.

Inventory and receivables swell

Working capital tells a similar story. At the end of September, BYD's inventories stood 60.08% above their level at the close of 2025, while receivables were up 52.61%. The company attributes both increases to the expansion of its foreign vehicle business.

The build-up ties up cash that only converts back into liquidity once stock turns into sales and receivables into payments. Operating cash flow rose 33.36% between January and September 2026, which helps fund the expansion — a positive signal as long as the capital commitment stays manageable.

New metal on the home front

At home, BYD launched the second-generation Seal 07 in China, offering it with both a fully battery-electric powertrain and as a plug-in hybrid, according to media reports. Entry prices are lower than before, while range has improved over the outgoing generation.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Stella Li's Toyota ambition

Vice-President Stella Li used a TIME interview published yesterday to address trade barriers, the backlash against Chinese electric cars and the company's ambition to overtake Toyota. For investors, the quality of that expansion hinges on whether rising exports translate into attractive returns after currency effects and heavier capital requirements.

BYD's international ambition will ultimately be judged on three things together: volume growth, cash generation and durable profitability. The European Parliament's request for scrutiny — and its talk of procurement exclusion — adds a political variable to that equation that no exchange rate or inventory line can capture.
