BYD's Overseas Battery Surge Meets a 350,000-Vehicle Ceiling in Europe

BYD's expansion story is running on two tracks that don't move in step. New figures show its battery installations outside China climbing sharply, while at home the volume and market share both slipped. On the vehicle side, a fresh trade understanding between Brussels and Beijing has put a number on how many hybrids can flow into Europe each year.

A tale of two battery markets

Data from SNE Research cited in an October 15 report put BYD's overseas battery installations at 39.7 GWh for the period covered — a 66.5% jump on the same stretch a year earlier. That growth stands in contrast to a softer home market, though it says nothing about how many cars BYD is shipping abroad. The distinction matters: a strong battery business does not by itself answer questions about vehicle demand.

Inside China, installations reached 106.44 GWh, down 4.3% year on year, with a market share of 18.53%. The domestic share fell 4.04 percentage points. So both the installed volume and the relative position weakened at home, even as the overseas picture brightened — the regional split within the battery unit is widening.

Europe sets a hard limit

The vehicle business faces a different set of constraints. On October 13, BYD shares came under pressure as investors weighed export prospects and margins after the European Union and China agreed to cap Chinese hybrid imports. Reuters reported an annual ceiling of 350,000 vehicles. On top of that, Beijing plans to cut the export tax rebate for alternative-drive vehicles from 13% to 9%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The two measures bite in different places. The import cap limits access to the European market by volume; the lower rebate sits behind the margin concerns that were reported. Neither figure, on its own, allows a specific earnings impact for BYD to be calculated.

Malaysia: a partner named, a start date missing

In Southeast Asia, BYD is pushing local assembly and distribution forward on several fronts. BYD Malaysia named Inokom in Kulim as its assembly partner on Thursday, a deal covering local assembly from shipped vehicle kits — an extension of BYD's Malaysian activities beyond sales, though not evidence that production has begun. No model has been fixed and no start date confirmed, so the economic contribution remains an open question.

Distribution is further along. A new outlet opened yesterday in Rawang, Selangor, operated by BE Autohaus — another BYD site for the BE Group after Setia Alam and Kota Kemuning. BYD Sime Motors runs 45 sales and marketing outlets nationwide, 33 service facilities and 16 body-and-paint centres, so the new location slots into a network covering both vehicle sales and after-sales care. An opening promotion in Rawang runs from 19 to 30 October 2026, with test drives and offers on selected models.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Philippines: tariff relief, currency drag

On the Philippines, BYD is backing an extension of duty-free EV imports through 2040; under the existing rule the exemption ends in 2028. The terms for imported vehicles therefore remain a key variable for regional expansion. AB Capital Securities also flags a weak peso as a possible risk to import costs and margins — growing sales and a broader dealer network don't erase such pressures on their own. Ayala/BYD sales reached 28,399 vehicles through August 2026, already ahead of the full-year 2025 total.

The pieces of BYD's Southeast Asian build-out are tangible but unevenly advanced. In the Philippines, sales sit alongside an unresolved tariff question. In Malaysia, the retail network is growing while local assembly waits on specifics about model and production timing. What counts for investors is not the tally of new locations but whether they turn into durable business.
