BYD has set 5 November 2026 as the start date for the second-generation Seal 07, a model that will arrive in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid form. The announcement gives investors something the recent run of sales and earnings reports cannot: a forward-looking date to work with. What it does not give them is any evidence of incremental demand or profit — that has to be earned at the dealership.

The stock added 2.7% today, a move The Business Times tied to the October delivery report published on Sunday rather than to the product calendar. That distinction matters. A confirmed launch plan is a statement of intent; a monthly sales figure is a receipt.

October's numbers carry the momentum

BYD reported 490,168 new-energy vehicle sales for October, up 10.97% year on year. Battery-electric models did the heavy lifting, climbing 37.38% to 305,743 units, while exports reached 170,194 vehicles. The Business Times linked the stronger overseas demand to easing concerns about a soft home market — an interpretation that explains the share-price reaction but stops well short of an all-clear for the broader business.

Those company figures are unaudited and remain subject to revision. Even so, they form the backdrop against which the Seal 07 launch will be judged.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

A profit beat that wasn't

Reuters reported on Thursday that third-quarter 2026 net profit rose 28% to 10 billion yuan. Growth, yes — but short of what the market had pencilled in. Brokerage estimates compiled ahead of the release ranged from 11.4 billion to 12.95 billion yuan, leaving a gap that the strong delivery headline does nothing to close.

Revenue for the quarter advanced 13.6% to 221.5 billion yuan. Set alongside the planned model launch, the picture is mixed: BYD is expanding and preparing new product, but neither fact yet proves that earnings are about to inflect.

The longer view is less flattering still. For January through September 2026, BYD booked a net profit of RMB 22.345 billion — a decline of 4.24%. Those figures are also unaudited, and they temper how much weight the improved single quarter can bear.

Goldman flags the pricing problem

Goldman Sachs weighed in on Friday, pointing to average selling prices that came in below expectations, driven by heavier dealer discounts on older models. Quarterly revenue, in the bank's assessment, also fell short of forecasts. The upshot: the metric to watch over the coming months is the quality of growth, not unit volumes alone.

Goldman nonetheless reaffirmed its buy rating and its HK$134 price target on the H-shares. That endorsement does not erase the pricing concern — it simply shows that a broadly attractive valuation can coexist with operational reservations. A convincing positive signal for investors would therefore require more than a smooth model rollout; BYD would also need to demonstrate it can move metal on economically sensible terms. If new models win buyers mainly by conceding further on price, the central doubt stays open.

Product cadence is accelerating

The Seal 07 is not arriving into a vacuum. On 27 October, BYD launched the third generation of the Qin Plus DM-i in China, with list prices spanning RMB 79,900 to RMB 100,900. A refreshed model is therefore already in showrooms before the November date.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

In the bull case, that renewal helps capture demand and reduces reliance on discounts for older stock — a possible effect, not a demonstrated one. The recent profit trend offers some support: the 28% third-quarter gain shows earnings growth is achievable, even if it does not guarantee a repeat.

Overseas sales provide a second lever. Should those delivery impulses combine with sustainable pricing, new models and exports together could help absorb the strain of cutthroat competition. The bear case is just as coherent: if fresh metal needs fresh incentives to sell, higher volume may only partly offset lower transaction prices. Reuters reported on Friday that competition has intensified both at home and abroad, which means export growth is no dependable shield against pricing pressure.

What 5 November actually decides

For the investment case, the Seal 07 launch matters less as an addition to the line-up than as a test of economic positioning. A new demand catalyst would be welcome. Visible relief on the discount front would matter more. Until BYD shows it can pair new products with resilient transaction prices, the sales momentum and the earnings scepticism will keep pulling in opposite directions.
