BYD has rolled out a pair of product moves in quick succession, launching the second-generation Seagull in China while its SHARK DMO pickup collected top marks in European safety testing. The two developments, arriving within a day of each other, underscore a company pushing hard on model breadth even as the trading picture remains subdued.

The new Seagull, which went on sale today in China, is substantially larger than the model it replaces. It seats five and draws power from a 95-kilowatt electric motor. At least one trim will carry LiDAR technology, and BYD began taking pre-orders for the revised EV on October 9.

On the safety front, the SHARK DMO earned the maximum five-star rating under the Euro-NCAP protocol, a result reported yesterday. The score gives the automaker a useful credential as it steadily builds out its presence beyond its home market.

Commercial Vehicles Add Volume

The commercial side of the business has been contributing its own momentum. An electric semi-tractor rolled off the line at the Huai'an plant on October 9, pushing BYD past the 150,000 mark for commercial electric vehicles produced. Over the first nine months of 2026, sales in that segment climbed 28.46% to 53,032 units.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Global demand continues to anchor growth, though the ground beneath it is shifting. September deliveries of alternative-energy vehicles reached 463,561, of which 180,700 went to export markets. For the January-to-September stretch, the total came to 3,131,576 vehicles — a modest 3.94% decline against the same period a year earlier.

Two Sets of Rules Take Shape

Fresh constraints are emerging on both the export and the tax front. According to Reuters, the European Union and China have agreed to cap imported Chinese hybrid vehicles at 350,000 a year. BYD, together with SAIC and Chery, accounts for more than 90% of that volume within the EU.

Compounding the pressure, China plans to cut the value-added tax rebate on exports of alternative-energy vehicles from 13% to 9%, effective April 1, 2027. The finance ministry and the state tax administration announced the change on October 12. No specific earnings impact for BYD can be derived from the announced reduction on its own.

Europe: Intent, Not Yet Decision

On the production side, BYD is eyeing additional European plants. Executive Vice President Stella Li said on October 13 that the company is targeting two more factories there, with France among the possible locations. No site or investment decision has been disclosed — the plan is an expansion intention rather than a settled factory project, a distinction that matters when weighing local manufacturing against exports from China.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Separately, the company's Fangchengbao brand has passed a cumulative sales milestone of 600,000 vehicles, according to a corporate statement reported by media on Sunday. That figure describes total brand sales to date, not the pace of any single month, so it should not be read as evidence of an acceleration in current business. Brand success and overall company sales momentum are measured on different scales.

Shares Stay Under Water

Despite the steady stream of model news, the stock has yet to find firm footing. In pre-market trading the share price stood at EUR 8.37, a gain of 0.8%. Since the start of the year, however, the paper is down 22%. The new models and the build-out of the commercial vehicle arm are now being counted on to keep the sales tempo up.
