BYD recalls 183,211 Qin and Tang vehicles over brake-pedal stoppers, while launching the Formula S range and planning European production.

BYD is pressing ahead on two fronts at once: rolling out faster-charging models and building overseas production, even as Chinese regulators ordered it to fix a large batch of cars already on the road.

China's market watchdog directed the automaker to recall 183,211 vehicles from its Qin and Tang lines, covering model years 2014 through 2022. The defect involves brake-pedal stoppers that can crack or come loose. According to Reuters, BYD will replace the parts at no cost to owners through authorized dealers. Investors shrugged off the news — the stock added 0.2% on the day to close at EUR 9.05.

Formula S Arrives With a Five-Minute Top-Up

The recall landed in the same week BYD expanded its lineup on two fronts. On Sunday, its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand launched the Formula S range in China, spanning five models — three sedans and two GT variants — priced between 189,900 and 239,900 yuan, undercutting Tesla's Model 3.

At the heart of the series sits the second generation of BYD's in-house Blade battery. The integrated fast-charging system can go from 10% to 70% capacity in five minutes, according to the company, while a 10% to 97% charge takes nine minutes.

A day later, BYD moved in the entry segment. The compact Yuan Up, sold abroad as the Atto 2, gained a Feichi Edition in China starting at 74,800 yuan. It runs a lithium iron phosphate pack from subsidiary FinDreams with 51.13 kWh of capacity, good for up to 501 kilometers on China's CLTC cycle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Supporting the product push is a charging network that already numbers more than 10,000 fast chargers across 332 Chinese cities. BYD intends to double that figure to 20,000 by the end of the year. The stock was quoted at EUR 9.01 premarket, down 16% since the start of 2026.

Europe: Buy, Don't Share

On the manufacturing side, BYD wants to acquire an existing European plant rather than split production capacity with partners, as became known last Friday. Europe adviser Alfredo Altavilla named Spain and France as the leading candidates for a purchase, with Italy as a fallback. The approach responds to possible EU requirements on local value creation.

Altavilla's blueprint calls for three assembly plants and a battery factory in Europe over time. A decision on the second site — potentially an acquisition and modernization of an existing facility — is due before year-end, after production begins at BYD's first European plant in Hungary.

Commercial vehicles form a parallel track. Executive Vice President Stella Li said last Friday that BYD plans to bring its first heavy truck to Europe in 2027 and eventually build the trucks sold there on the continent as well.

Overseas Targets Keep Climbing

Those investment plans rest on ambitious volume goals. Deutsche Bank reported on September 8 that management is targeting 1.9 million to 2.0 million overseas deliveries in 2026. For 2027, two brokerages came away from talks with management pointing to more than 2.5 million units abroad.

The momentum is already visible. BYD shipped 188,746 vehicles overseas in August, up 134.6% from a year earlier, bringing the first eight months of the year to 1,157,954 units. Smaller markets are contributing too: in New Zealand, four years after launch, BYD passed 15,000 registered vehicles. To soften local trade barriers, the company is standing up production abroad — its plant in Brazil's Bahia state employed 5,500 direct workers in July, with 20,000 direct and indirect jobs expected at full operation.

Since the start of the year the share price has fallen 15%. How smoothly BYD matches its European site selection with the servicing of recalled cars at home will shape the quarters ahead.
