BYD's Export Math Tightens as CATL's Miss Weighs on Hong Kong Autos
Published on 10/21/2026 at 10:32 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD shares came under pressure on Wednesday, caught in a sector-wide downdraft after battery maker CATL posted quarterly profit that fell short of expectations. The stock was down 3.2% on the day, with media reports pointing to CATL's weaker-than-forecast numbers as the drag on Hong Kong-listed automakers. XPeng and Nio slipped alongside it.
The distinction matters for anyone holding BYD. The trigger sits in the industry backdrop, not in any fresh disclosure from the carmaker itself — the disappointing figures belong to CATL, and the selling spread across the wider auto and battery complex. Today's weakness is best read as a move in the sector rather than a verdict on BYD's own trading.
A Profit Miss From the Battery Bench
CATL reported quarterly profit of RMB 21.25 billion against a market estimate of RMB 26.03 billion. Its shares fell sharply after the release, and the read-across hit peers. For BYD investors, the key point is that another company's numbers explain the weak tape — they are no evidence of a matching trend in BYD's own business, and today's selling pressure should not be equated with a fresh profit warning from the automaker.
September Sales Cut Both Ways
BYD's own operating data offers a more mixed picture. September deliveries came in at 463,561 vehicles, up 16.98% on the same month a year earlier, the company reported on October 1. That monthly figure is a positive marker, but it covers only September and says nothing about how the business has performed across the year to date. For that, the cumulative number is what counts: 3,131,576 vehicles sold from January through September, down 3.9% on the corresponding period a year earlier.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
Two signals therefore sit side by side — growth in the most recent reported month, and a shortfall on the cumulative tally. A single strong September does not establish a recovery across the full reporting period, nor do unit sales translate directly into profit or margin.
The Export Rebate Is the Real Earnings Variable
Separate from the trading environment, a policy shift is quietly rewriting the economics of every vehicle BYD ships abroad. China's Ministry of Finance announced on October 12 that it will cut the VAT rebate on new-energy vehicles from 13% to 9%, effective April 1, 2027. The change does not merely touch overseas sales volumes; it alters the per-unit economics of each exported car.
Deutsche Bank, in a note dated October 12, put the potential impact at roughly CNY 5,000 less net profit per exported BYD vehicle, an estimate that applies from the second quarter of 2027 onward. That describes a prospective burden, not a profit decline already booked.
Product News on a Different Track
On the product side, BYD had progress to report. On Friday the company announced that its SHARK pickup had earned the top five-star Euro-NCAP safety rating. Earlier, on October 12, it unveiled the ATTO 8 SUV with FLASH Charging at the Paris Motor Show. Both items concern the vehicle lineup and how it is rated — a different lens on the company than today's sector-wide share reaction.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
October 29 Becomes the Next Anchor
Roughly a week ago, BYD said its board would meet on October 29, 2026, to review and approve the unaudited third-quarter results for the nine months to September 30, 2026, and their publication. That date is the next concrete anchor for company-specific valuation: the sales release describes vehicles sold, while the upcoming results turn attention to the financial picture.
Until then, the layers stay apart. The sector backdrop is weighing on the stock today. The operating picture shows a stronger September against a still-declining cumulative total. And the announced export rebate change hangs over future profitability, while the product announcements carry no read on current earnings.
