BYD's overseas deliveries surge 70.65% while domestic sales drop 39.57%, driving a 28% stock recovery from June lows despite UK market tensions.

The arithmetic behind BYD's recent stock recovery is straightforward: overseas deliveries are booming while domestic sales are contracting sharply. The Shenzhen-based electric vehicle giant shipped 792,256 vehicles abroad in the first half of the year, a 70.65 percent surge year-on-year, with exports now accounting for 43.81 percent of total NEV sales. Back home, the picture is far less flattering — domestic volumes fell to 1,016,255 units, a drop of 39.57 percent.

That divergence helps explain why the Hong Kong-listed shares have clawed back more than 28 percent from their 52-week low of 8.03 euros hit on June 30, 2026. The stock closed Friday at 10.30 euros, down 0.94 percent on the day, but still up 18.73 percent over the past 30 trading sessions. The rebound has been sharp, though the shares remain roughly 22 percent below their August 2025 peak of 13.23 euros.

Britain Becomes a Flashpoint

The export momentum is most visible in the UK, where Chinese brands have captured around 15 percent of all new registrations. The charge is led by SAIC Motor's MG, BYD, and Chery's JAECOO and OMODA marques. Unlike the European Union, which imposed tariffs on Chinese EVs in 2024 after finding unfair state subsidies, Britain has erected no such barriers — leaving domestic manufacturers exposed to the full force of the competitive onslaught.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the UK's SMMT trade body, delivered a blunt assessment on Thursday. Chinese producers are under "extraordinary pressure" — but it is their British rivals feeling the squeeze. "The Chinese can produce good vehicles at lower costs," Hawes told reporters, forcing traditional manufacturers to cut prices merely to stay in the game. He cited the intensifying competition as one of several factors behind a 7.5 percent decline in British vehicle production in the first half of 2026, alongside trade uncertainty and subdued investment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

BYD's European push extends well beyond Britain. First-half registrations across the continent reached 174,144 vehicles — 3,793 units more than Tesla managed over the same stretch.

Home-Market Pain Persists

The domestic slump is no accident. BYD itself helped ignite China's EV price war in 2025, and the fallout continues to weigh on profitability. Citigroup estimates the company's China vehicle sales were unprofitable on a net basis in the first quarter of 2026. The export business has so far offset that weakness, but investors are left asking how long the pattern can hold if the domestic price battle rages on.

Dividend and Fresh Catalysts

Shareholders received some consolation on July 31, 2026, when BYD paid out its final dividend for fiscal 2025 to holders of its Hong Kong-listed shares. The payout amounts to 0.41141 Hong Kong dollars per share, converted from the 0.358 yuan per share approved at the annual general meeting on June 9. The company applied an exchange rate of 1 yuan to 1.1492 Hong Kong dollars for H-share holders, who can also elect to receive part of the distribution in yuan.

Tax treatment varies by investor type: non-resident institutional H-share holders face a 10 percent Chinese corporate income tax, mainland Southbound Trading investors are subject to 20 percent individual income tax, and foreign retail investors remain exempt from Chinese income tax on this distribution for now.

The dividend arrives alongside a pair of fresh corporate announcements. BYD has struck an exclusive infotainment partnership with DTS AutoStage, bringing audio and video entertainment to future models in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The rollout is slated for the fourth quarter of 2026, possibly earlier, making BYD the 14th major automaker to adopt the platform.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Separately, the company confirmed plans to unveil a humanoid robot prototype in August at its "Di Space" experience centres, a disclosure that briefly lifted its mainland-listed shares.

What to Watch Next

MarketScreener lists August 28, 2026 as the tentative date for BYD's second-quarter results, though the company has yet to confirm officially. Until then, the monthly export figures remain the clearest signal of whether the stock's recovery has staying power — and whether the overseas engine can keep compensating for a home market still mired in a price war of BYD's own making.
