The electric-vehicle maker's infrastructure blitz reached a symbolic milestone on Friday, even as the company's share price continues to trade well below its 52-week peak and management prepares to unveil first-half earnings this weekend.

BYD opened its 10,000th flash-charging station in Shenzhen, hitting the halfway mark on its target of 20,000 stations for the year. The network has doubled in under five months, having stood at just 5,000 stations at the end of March. Those charging points have already delivered 210 million kilowatt-hours of energy to 1.83 million users, with roughly a third of charging sessions coming from vehicles made by rival brands — a sign that the infrastructure play is broadening the company's ecosystem beyond its own customer base.

The build-out is being pursued in tandem with oil majors Sinopec, PetroChina and CNOOC, as well as Teld and JD.com. Of the planned total, 18,000 stations will be developed with partners while 2,000 will be located directly along motorways. International expansion is also underway, with the first UK stations already operational and 300 more slated to come online there by year-end.

The charging offensive underscores a strategic shift: BYD is increasingly anchoring its growth in supporting infrastructure rather than vehicle sales alone, a move designed to deepen customer loyalty beyond the model lineup.

A Delayed European Anchor

The infrastructure momentum, however, sits uneasily alongside a significant setback in Europe. The company's flagship overseas plant in Hungary — widely seen as the cornerstone of its European supply strategy — has been pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2026, roughly a year behind schedule. Reports cite allegations over working conditions and an investigation into state subsidies as contributing factors.

The delay complicates an otherwise robust export picture. Overseas sales surged 124.3 percent in July to a record 179,841 vehicles, while domestic deliveries slipped around 9 percent in the same month. Over the first seven months of the year, total sales reached 2,227,722 vehicles, down 10.5 percent year on year. To hit the company's self-imposed target of 5.0 to 5.5 million units for the full year, BYD would need to move roughly 530,000 vehicles monthly — a pace it has recently fallen well short of.

Model Blitz at Home and Abroad

To counter the domestic softness, BYD is leaning on a dense cadence of new launches. On August 22, the flagship Da Han sedan hit the Australian market with five-minute fast-charging capability and a range of 1,008 kilometers on the CLTC cycle, priced under 52,000 Australian dollars.

Days earlier, pre-sales began in China for the Sealion 08 SUV, priced between 230,000 and 280,000 yuan. The electric version offers up to 900 kilometers of range and debuts the second-generation Blade battery with fast-charging functionality. Official market launch is set for September 2.

In Korea, BYD's retail footprint is expanding too. A new showroom opened at the Starfield Market Wolgye in northeastern Seoul, operated by partner DT Networks, which runs 15 showrooms and six service centers across the region. The 139-square-meter space, holding three vehicles, targets families aged 30 to 40 in Seoul's northeast and Gyeonggi. Demand is expected to center on the Sealion 6 DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV, whose Korean deliveries recently commenced. The model carries a certified all-electric range of 70 kilometers, a combined range of 1,000 kilometers, and a price tag of 37.5 million won (around $27,250).

Brazil, meanwhile, saw the unveiling of the new Mako pickup, a Sealion 6 derivative pairing a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor for combined output of 166 kilowatts and 400 newton-meters. The vehicle launches with front-wheel drive, with an all-wheel-drive variant to follow. New Zealand, however, has been ruled out for the model, with local chief Warren Willmot indicating a "more suitable work vehicle" is being prepared for the Australia-New Zealand market instead.

A Share Price in the Balance

The stock closed Thursday at 9.93 euros, down 1.5 percent, and sits 7.2 percent lower on the year. It remains 24 percent below its 52-week high of 12.99 euros, reached in late August last year. Friday saw the shares tick up 0.9 percent to 10.02 euros, a modest stabilization after months of declines.

The company's board is set to approve and publish first-half results for the six months through end-June on Saturday. After a weak first quarter in which profits fell by more than half, investors will be scrutinizing whether export momentum can offset the domestic slowdown — and whether the charging network's rapid expansion can translate into durable competitive advantage.

Beyond the commercial front, BYD has also shown a humanitarian face: together with Nio and Xiaomi, it donated ten million yuan to victims of a landslide in the Xizang region, where three people have died and over 550 remain unaccounted for.
