BYD's Bus Showcase Abroad Runs Into a European Security Question

BYD rolled out two new electric buses on Wednesday — an autonomous prototype in Singapore and a long-distance coach in Birmingham — but the more consequential news for shareholders may be coming out of Brussels, where more than a dozen Members of the European Parliament have asked the European Commission to assess potential security risks posed by the Chinese manufacturer's vehicles.

The lawmakers want the Commission to consider restrictions that could extend as far as excluding BYD from public procurement. That is a political demand, not an adopted measure, and the distinction matters enormously for anyone weighing the stock.

Two Signals Pulling in Different Directions

The shares rose 2.3% in the prior session, a move Reuters attributed to the already-published October sales report rather than to any political development. That report remains the economic backbone of the bull case: BYD sold 490,168 vehicles last month, up 11% year on year, with overseas deliveries surging 102.8%.

Those export numbers helped offset soft demand at home and an intense price war in China, according to Reuters. The trouble is that the European security debate touches precisely the overseas channel BYD needs as a counterweight to its difficult domestic market — and the export figures cover all foreign markets, not Europe alone. A strong headline growth rate therefore tells investors nothing specific about European volumes.

BYD has pushed back on the central security concern, telling Reuters that vehicle and cloud data cannot be accessed remotely from China. Whether that assurance satisfies European policymakers is a separate question from whether the sales momentum holds.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

A Buy Rating With a Lower Bar

HSBC offered a broadly constructive view on Tuesday, reaffirming its buy recommendation while cutting its price targets to HKD 133 for the H-shares and RMB 113 for the A-shares. The combination carries more information than the positive rating alone: the bank still likes the stock, but the trimmed targets argue against an unqualifiedly bullish reading. What remains as the bull thesis is operating growth, not the assumption that political risk has already been cleared.

On the product side, BYD is emphasizing continuity in driver assistance. Its in-house anti-misinformation office on Wednesday denied claims that "God's Eye C" was being discontinued and rejected reports of a switch from "God's Eye B/C" to a different driving solution, saying the systems continue to receive updates.

Singapore and Birmingham: Two Kinds of Expansion

The bus unveilings illustrate how BYD is extending its international commercial vehicle footprint along different tracks. At the Singapore Urban Mobility Week, BYD and partner MOGOX showed the B90, an 8.5-metre right-hand-drive electric bus built for Level 4 autonomous driving and displayed for the first time worldwide. BYD supplies the vehicle platform and manufacturing; MOGOX contributes its MOGO AutoPilot driving system, with cameras and solid-state LiDAR among the hardware. The setup is tailored to left-hand traffic and right-hand-drive markets such as Singapore.

MOGOX won the contract for Singapore's first official autonomous bus project at this level and passed the Land Transport Authority's M1 test — though that award belongs to MOGOX and should not be conflated with a confirmed order for the jointly presented B90. The technology partner brings operating experience: its MOGOBUS vehicles run in more than 20 Chinese cities, and it has partnerships with ComfortDelGro Bus in Singapore as well as partners in Luxembourg and South Korea. For BYD, the significance lies in pairing its electric bus platform with the partner's autonomous driving technology — a development milestone, not yet evidence of broad commercial deployment.

In Birmingham, at the Euro Bus Expo, BYD presented the C12 DUO electric intercity coach, seating up to 57 passengers with a range of up to 340 miles. It features an LFP Blade battery and DC fast-charging capability, and joins a display that also includes a double-decker and further single-decker buses. According to BYD, more than 3,000 electric buses are already in service or slated for introduction in the UK, and the company offers a standard 15-year warranty on commercial vehicle batteries.

Where the Growth Story Could Snag

The serious counterargument to the expansion narrative is a combination of political access barriers and plain commercial competition. Should the Commission take up restrictions, BYD's chances in public procurement could suffer — a meaningful hit to that sales channel even without a general sales ban.

Volume alone, meanwhile, does not automatically satisfy profit expectations. Earnings came in below analyst estimates, according to Reuters, against forecasts that had ranged between 11.4 billion and 12.95 billion yuan. That shortfall explains why additional political uncertainty carries weight despite growing sales: growth has to show up in results that withstand scrutiny, not just in vehicle counts.

The Catalyst to Watch

As long as overseas business offsets weakness at home and no relevant access hurdles materialize, the growth thesis remains coherent. The next concrete political catalyst is a response from the European Commission to the lawmakers' request. A review would not yet be a restriction; an exclusion from procurement would be a commercially significant intervention. That dividing line will determine how durable the positive sales story proves — and concrete orders and actual deployment will matter more to the economic assessment than trade-show premieres.
