BYD rolled out the third-generation Qin Plus DM-i on Tuesday, pairing a limited-time price window of 76,900 to 97,900 yuan with a longer electric range and optional LiDAR — a bid to arrest a slide that has seen sales of the Qin family fall 54.71% year-on-year over the first nine months.

The revamped sedan, which delivers up to 220 kilometers of electric range on the CLTC standard, is not the only fresh metal in showrooms. BYD introduced the second-generation Seagull in China on October 20, priced between 65,900 and 99,900 yuan, fitted with the fast-charging technology of its second-generation Blade battery and, like the Qin, optional LiDAR.

The product push lands against a difficult backdrop. BYD's third-quarter 2026 report, published Thursday, showed net profit of 10.02 billion yuan, up 28% from a year earlier. Reuters noted the figure still fell short of expectations, with broker estimates ranging from 11.4 billion to 12.95 billion yuan, and reported margin pressure from intense domestic competition. Revenue also missed consensus, according to media reports, which pointed to weaker China sales and higher dealer discounts weighing on results.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Two Houses, Two Verdicts

Where the analysts diverge is on the quality of that growth. Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its "Overweight" rating on the H-shares on Friday with a target of HK$114, emphasizing the profitability of the overseas business and the company's ability to convert sales into earnings. The bank also flagged currency losses exceeding RMB 2 billion in the third quarter — a burden it absorbed without changing its positive stance.

JPMorgan took the opposite tack on Tuesday, cutting the A-shares from "Neutral" to "Underweight" and slashing its A-share target from RMB 88 to RMB 65. The bank cited stagnating domestic demand, higher component costs, lower VAT rebates on exports and the prospect of EU import quotas on plug-in hybrids. Its caution extended to the H-shares, where the rating stayed at "Neutral" but the target dropped from HK$88 to HK$60.

The distinction between share classes matters: the downgrade applied explicitly to the A-shares, while the H-share call was a softer reassessment rather than an outright bearish turn.

What the Refreshed Models Must Prove

For investors, the model launches and the analyst notes pose the same underlying question from different angles. More equipment and sharper pricing may lift volume, but whether Qin and Seagull win additional demand without higher sales incentives devouring the profit contribution is unproven. Rising quarterly earnings alone do not settle it — the durability of those earnings in the face of domestic competition, and the profitable contribution the overseas business can make after costs and currency effects, is where the two brokerage views part ways.
