BYD Patent Filings and Model Blitz Coexist With a 22% Year-to-Date Slide

BYD filed a design patent for an in-house smart robot and refreshed its lineup, while weighing two more European plants and a 2030 hiring goal.

BYD is pressing ahead on two fronts at once — filing design protection for an in-house intelligent robot while refreshing its vehicle lineup — even as its share price continues to erode in Frankfurt trading.

China's intellectual property authority, the CNIPA, has published a design patent covering a smart robot developed by the automaker. The filing signals a push into embodied artificial intelligence and reflects a broader effort to lock down key technologies internally rather than license them from outside.

That technological diversification runs alongside an aggressive product offensive. BYD has added the Great Tang SUV to its upper-segment range, opened pre-orders for the second-generation Seagull, and is bringing the Denza Z9S to market. On the battery side, the company is turning to immersion cooling to sharpen thermal management and charging speeds.

ATTO 8 Lands in Paris With Nine-Minute Charging

At the Paris Motor Show, BYD unveiled the seven-seat ATTO 8 for European buyers. The model carries a second-generation Blade battery with 115 kilowatt-hours of capacity and is engineered to charge from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. European launch is slated for the first quarter of 2027.

The product blitz lands in a market defined by fierce competitive pressure — a backdrop that has prompted analysts to trim their price targets while keeping their buy ratings intact.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Two More European Plants Under Review

Beyond product, BYD is weighing a substantial build-out of its European industrial footprint. Executive Vice President Stella Li said yesterday that the company intends to lift its European headcount above 40,000 by 2030, and that two additional production sites on the continent are under consideration.

France and Spain are among the candidate locations, according to Bloomberg and Reuters. Li confirmed France sits on the shortlist and that the option is being scrutinized closely, though no final decision has been made.

The factory-first approach also responds to trade policy. The European Union and China recently agreed to cap annual Chinese hybrid vehicle imports into the EU at 350,000 units. Building inside Europe could help BYD sidestep potential import restrictions and shorten delivery routes.

September Deliveries Jump 17%, But Nine-Month Tally Lags

Despite the regulatory headwinds, shipments picked up in the latest month. BYD moved 463,561 vehicles worldwide in September 2026, a 17.0% increase over the same month a year earlier — matching the roughly 17% growth figure reported across both monthly and year-on-year comparisons.

The longer view is less flattering. Across the first nine months of 2026, total sales reached 3.13 million vehicles, down 3.94% from the prior-year period.

Overseas, Britain delivered a standout: 20,140 new registrations in September set a monthly record and placed BYD second in the sales rankings.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Geopolitics Tops the Risk List

Li identified geopolitics as the single biggest obstacle to BYD's global expansion. On the US market, the company has no plans to offer passenger cars for now, directing its overseas efforts toward other regions — Europe chief among them.

Whether the proposed European plants move forward soon now rests on the outcome of ongoing feasibility reviews in the target countries.

Market Reaction Muted

Investors have shown little enthusiasm. BYD shares fell 1.4% today to EUR 8.38, extending the year-to-date decline to 22%. In the prior session, the stock lost 1.8% to close at EUR 8.50, leaving it down 21% since the start of the year — though still 5.8% above its 52-week low.
