BYD Lines Up Paris Debut as Export Momentum Counters a Softening Home Market

BYD refreshed several models and set a Paris auto show debut, while JPMorgan cut its target to 88 HK$ and trimmed its stake amid softer China demand.

BYD is stacking up product launches on two continents while navigating a trickier sales environment at home. The Shenzhen-based automaker used September 28 to unveil updates across several nameplates, and it is now preparing a formal appearance at the Paris auto show, where its press conference is scheduled for October 12, 2026. The company intends to display the DOLPHIN G DM-i and the SHARK there, along with at least one additional vehicle premiere.

The refresh cycle kicked off with the DOLPHIN SURF, which gains a five-seat configuration and, in its top trim, a larger infotainment display with built-in Google services. On the same day, BYD Auto Japan rolled out the updated ATTO 3 EX, offering a new all-wheel-drive variant and a 620-kilometer range for the rear-wheel-drive version. A preview of the second-generation Seal 07 sedan also landed that day; the car will be sold with a choice of two powertrains — a pure battery-electric setup and a plug-in hybrid — though pricing and a launch timeline were left unstated. The midsize sedan segment is fiercely contested, and BYD treats regular overhauls of its established lines as a key lever for defending share and pulling in new buyers.

A Production Milestone, and a Software Fix

Operational news has been arriving just as quickly. On September 29, the ten-millionth vehicle from BYD's Dynasty series — the flagship Da Han sedan — rolled off the line, with its market launch set for October 13. Not everything went smoothly: on Saturday the company confirmed a software vulnerability in the Shark 6's infotainment system that had allowed an unauthorized app to be installed. BYD said it would deliver an over-the-air fix once internal checks are complete.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Those initiatives are unfolding against a mixed demand picture. Sales of new-energy vehicles climbed 16.98 percent year on year in September to 463,561 units — the highest reading so far this year. Over the first nine months, volume reached 3,131,576 units, a touch below the prior-year figure. Globally, group sales slipped 3.94 percent between January and September to just over 3.13 million vehicles. Overseas deliveries of passenger cars and pickups, however, jumped 153.9 percent in September, according to Reuters, cushioning the pullback in Chinese showrooms. Whether that export surge can underpin overall growth over the longer haul depends heavily on how the new variants perform abroad.

JPMorgan Steps to the Sidelines

Caution from the analyst community has added to the challenge. Roughly a week ago, JPMorgan cut its target for the Hong Kong-listed shares to 88 HK$ from 124 HK$ and downgraded the stock to Neutral from Overweight, citing weaker domestic demand in China, rising input costs and trade barriers overseas. A mandatory disclosure to the Hong Kong exchange also showed JPMorgan Chase & Co. trimming its stake, with its reported position slipping just below the five percent threshold. Back home, competition with rivals such as Geely is intensifying noticeably.

In today's session the stock is holding up. It trades at EUR 8.51, a gain of 1.4 percent, and sits 5.2 percent above its 52-week low of EUR 8.03.
