BYD's board will convene in Hong Kong on October 29 to review and approve unaudited third-quarter and nine-month figures for 2026, the company said in a mandatory exchange filing. The numbers will land with the group still well short of the pace needed to hit its full-year volume target — a gap that has become the central question for investors.

UOB Kay Hian calculated on October 9 that BYD would need to move an average of 622,800 vehicles a month in the fourth quarter to reach its goal of five million units for the year. September deliveries came in at 463,561, leaving a substantial stretch to close.

Price Targets Trimmed, Ratings Held

Analysts have been adjusting their models without abandoning their bullish calls. Bernstein's Neil Beveridge reaffirmed his buy rating on October 9 while cutting his target to HK$130 from HK$136. A day earlier, CGS International lowered its target to HK$103.60 from HK$114, also keeping a positive stance.

Executive Vice President Stella Li, speaking to Reuters, identified geopolitics as the single biggest obstacle to the company's global expansion. Fierce competition at home is compounding the pressure from abroad.

New Metal for Both Home and Away

BYD is countering with a crowded product calendar. At the Paris Motor Show on October 12, the company unveiled the seven-seat ATTO 8, fitted with a 115-kilowatt-hour battery from its second-generation Blade family; the model is slated to reach markets in the first quarter of 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Domestically, the Da Han EV promises up to 1,008 kilometers of range, and the second-generation Seagull city car went on sale in China today. The revamped Seagull is considerably larger than its predecessor, seats five, runs a 95-kilowatt electric motor, and offers LiDAR technology on at least one trim. Pre-orders had opened on October 9.

Charging infrastructure is advancing in step. During the Golden Week holidays, BYD's 12,165 company-operated flash-charging stations in China handled more than 1.22 million charging sessions, according to media reports.

Safety and Commercial Vehicles Add Ballast

The overseas push picked up a credential yesterday: the SHARK DMO pickup earned a five-star rating in Europe's Euro-NCAP crash tests, a result that reinforces the manufacturer's gradual build-out beyond its home market.

Commercial vehicles are contributing too. An electric semi-tractor rolled off the line at the Huai'an plant on October 9, marking 150,000 commercial electric vehicles produced in total. Sales in the segment climbed 28.46% to 53,032 units in the first nine months of 2026.

Export Engine Meets a Brussels Ceiling

September's 463,561 new-energy deliveries included 180,700 export units. For January through September, cumulative sales reached 3,131,576 vehicles — a slight decline of 3.94% year on year.

Trade policy is sharpening the picture in Europe. Reuters reported that the EU and China have agreed on a cap of 350,000 imported Chinese hybrid vehicles per year. BYD, together with SAIC and Chery, accounts for more than 90% of that volume in the bloc. On top of that, China plans to cut the value-added tax rebate on exports of new-energy vehicles to 9% from 13% effective April 1, 2027.

The shares were steady at EUR 8.37 in pre-market trading, up 0.8%, though they remain down roughly 22% to 23% since the start of the year and sit only about 3.1% above their 52-week low. Whether the model offensive can deliver the fourth-quarter surge will be the test when the October 29 figures arrive.
