BYD is pushing ahead on two fronts at once: a flagship sedan aimed at wealthier Chinese buyers and a refreshed budget hatchback meant to defend its home turf. The dual strategy emerged this week as the automaker began selling its new Da Han electric limousine in China and confirmed that the second-generation Seagull will launch there on October 20.

The Da Han, flagship of BYD's Dynasty line, marks a deliberate move into the large touring-sedan segment. Official prices were set at 235,900 CNY, 249,900 CNY and 275,900 CNY, keeping entry costs below the range quoted during pre-sales. The car features fast-charging capability and, in its longest-range configuration, can travel up to 1,008 kilometers on China's CLTC test cycle — a combination of range and charging speed that BYD hopes will ratchet up pressure on established rivals in the premium tier.

At the opposite end of the price scale, the company is not standing still. Pre-orders for the new Seagull opened roughly a week ago, and early units have already reached Chinese dealers. The compact model grows in size compared with its predecessor and, according to industry reports, will offer optional LiDAR sensors for driver assistance — bringing advanced features into a cheaper bracket. A 95-kW electric motor and two battery options round out the package.

Export Engine in High Gear

Beyond China's borders, BYD is gaining ground fast. Figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) show the company topped the ranking of Chinese exporters of new-energy vehicles in September, shipping 174,277 units — a 151.6% jump from the same month a year earlier.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

To lock in that momentum, BYD is building up local operations abroad. Executive Vice President Stella Li told Bloomberg that the group aims to expand its European workforce to roughly 40,000 employees by 2030. The company also weighed in Wednesday on the second round of consultations between China and the EU on trade and investment, saying it supports responsible internationalization and the healthy, orderly development of China's auto industry.

That diplomatic language follows a rough patch for the stock. On October 12, Reuters reported that the share price slipped 1.8% on news of possible quota rules for hybrid imports. The broader backdrop remains challenging: new regulatory restrictions overseas and a bruising price war at home have soured investor sentiment, with the stock down 22% since the start of the year.

Analysts Trim Targets Ahead of Q3 Print

JPMorgan added to the cautious mood in late September, downgrading BYD from Overweight to Neutral on September 29 and cutting its price target to 88 HK$ from 124 HK$. The bank pointed to soft domestic demand, rising input costs and trade-policy hurdles that could slow the company's overseas expansion.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

In pre-market trading today, the shares changed hands at EUR 8.37, putting them 4.2% above their 52-week low of EUR 8.03. The stock closed yesterday at EUR 8.35 after a modest gain.

Investors will get a clearer read on profitability on October 29, 2026, when the board meets to review unaudited results for the third quarter and the first nine months of the fiscal year.
