More than four out of five employees in Austria show up to work even when their mental reserves are spent, according to a new representative survey that paints a stark picture of workplace strain. The Mavie Stress Study 2026, based on interviews with 1,002 people aged 18 to 64, found that 83 percent of workers push through mental exhaustion rather than stepping back.

Stress itself has become a near-constant companion for most of the workforce. Two-thirds of respondents — 67 percent — reported feeling stressed often or very often, with women affected at a higher rate (73 percent) than men (61 percent). For 40 percent of participants, stress levels had climbed recently, and financial pressure emerged as the leading driver, cited by 39 percent.

A Communication Gap Between Leaders and Staff

The survey also exposes a striking disconnect in how mental health is discussed at work. While 56 percent of respondents described their own manager as stressed, 75 percent said they never talk about their own psychological wellbeing on the job. A majority — 54 percent — would welcome psychosocial support offerings from their employer.

Researchers and practitioners have increasingly turned their attention to leadership style as a lever for easing these pressures. Roman Briker of WHU examined the management principles of football coach Jürgen Klopp as a case study in guiding teams through adversity.

Among the examples cited are Borussia Dortmund's comeback in the 2013 Champions League quarter-final and the club's rise from 17th place at the 2014/15 winter break to European qualification. Klopp's later achievements with Liverpool FC — the 2019 Champions League title and the 2020 league championship — serve as further reference points for effective leadership under pressure.

A methodological framework for cooperation appears in the fourth, revised edition of "Erfolgsfaktor Menschlichkeit" by Gabriele Lindemann and Vera Heim. The book draws on Nonviolent Communication to outline approaches for humane leadership and collaboration.

Team leadership in social and socio-medical organisations gets separate treatment in a guide published on manager-ratgeber.de, which centres on clear areas of responsibility, resource management and conflict resolution.

Closing the Gap Between Intent and Impact

To bridge the distance between what people mean to do and how others actually experience it, the Center for Creative Leadership recommends the SBII method — Situation, Behavior, Impact, and a closing question about Intention. The approach responds to research from SWPS University in Warsaw showing that people judge themselves by their intentions while judging others by their impact.

Compassion toward oneself also matters for wellbeing, according to a study by Bassam Khoury at McGill University in Canada. Drawing on more than 1,200 participants, the research found that a kind attitude toward oneself, other people and animals correlates with greater wellbeing. One-sided care, by contrast, can lead to lower life satisfaction and social isolation.

Social psychologist Paul Piff, who received the Ig Nobel Prize in 2026 for his research, demonstrated how social status can shape behaviour. In experiments, participants from higher socioeconomic backgrounds showed a greater tendency toward selfish conduct and took nearly twice as many sweets as those from lower backgrounds.

Culture Change in Practice — and the Cost Questions Around It

Some companies have already committed to long-term cultural work. ELE-Gruppe, the Emscher-Lippe energy supplier, spent ten months developing a new leadership understanding and competency model with more than 50 employees under its "Nova" programme. That work now underpins "Esprit," a current efficiency initiative aimed at streamlining processes through automation and digitalisation.

These efforts unfold alongside debates about the financial burden on employers. The pension contribution rate currently stands at 18.6 percent of gross earnings. With possible increases on the horizon, experts advise easing financial pressure on employees through tailored benefits and retirement provision models rather than relying solely on across-the-board salary increases.

Looking ahead, the Mannheim Rhein-Neckar-Odenwald Chamber of Skilled Crafts has announced a free workshop on cross-generational leadership for 5 October 2026. Led by psychologist Emma Erhard, the Mannheim event will develop strategies for collaboration across age groups. Registration is open until the end of September.
