Brussels Clears EUR 319 Million for Infineon's Villach Fab as Qualcomm Deal Offsets Intel Drag
Published on 11/03/2026 at 06:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon's share price has been pulled in two directions at once. A downbeat fourth-quarter 2026 outlook from Intel weighed on European chip stocks on Friday, with the German chipmaker among the weakest performers in the DAX according to media reports — a move attributed to Intel's guidance rather than to any fresh analyst action on Infineon itself. Yet the stock still managed to close Thursday at EUR 50.95, up 0.2%, as a new technology pact with Qualcomm Technologies lent support.
That agreement covers joint development of a microcontroller-based subsystem for Snapdragon Ride reference platforms in software-defined vehicles. Infineon's design is intended to complement the vehicle computer platform, with the company naming high-performance computing and in-vehicle artificial intelligence as the target applications.
EU Green Light for Villach
The regulatory side of Infineon's expansion plans also moved forward. On Thursday the European Commission approved EUR 319 million in state aid for Austria, earmarked for modernising Infineon Technologies Austria's semiconductor facility in Villach. The funding falls under the European Chips Act and backs a project Infineon announced roughly a week earlier: around EUR 1.1 billion of investment at the site through 2034, aimed at building the world's first high-volume production line for GaN power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers. Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2027.
GaN technology also underpins the company's work on power supply systems. About two weeks ago Infineon said it had deepened cooperation with NVIDIA on power conversion systems for AI data centres, focusing on high-voltage intermediate bus converters for 800-volt DC architectures.

Warstein Lab Space Opens
On the domestic front, Infineon opened a new office and laboratory building in Warstein on 28 October. Around 350 employees are expected to work there, with laboratory space covering roughly 1,200 square metres.
The company is also reaching out to younger firms. On 22 October Infineon, UnternehmerTUM Accelerator, Microsoft and NVIDIA jointly announced the "Physical AI Growth Lab," a free programme aimed at European start-ups in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI. Running from January to April 2027, the accelerator will support 10 to 15 selected start-ups, with participation requiring no equity stake.
Robotics Winners Named
Earlier, on 19 October, Infineon named the winners of its startup challenge for humanoid robotics. Italy's AdapTronics took first place, followed by COSMOKE of South Korea and Germany's TECHiFAB.
