The most telling signal about Broadcom's current predicament isn't flashing on any stock ticker. It's buried in the credit markets, where bond traders have quietly been pricing in a level of risk that equity investors have been slower to acknowledge. While the shares drifted to 308.05 euros on Monday — a 2.4 percent dip that extended weekly losses to 6.1 percent — the real action was happening in the spreads.

A Financing Package That Keeps Growing

At the heart of the unease sits a proposed debt package that Broadcom is reportedly assembling to bankroll its AI chip financing efforts, with Anthropic among the beneficiaries. What started as a $60 billion figure has ballooned in the telling: reports now cite volumes between $70 billion and $80 billion, with some estimates stretching as high as $100 billion. The structure, according to market observers, would run through special purpose vehicles in two tranches — $45 billion in senior secured debt and $35 billion in junior secured paper.

That escalation in numbers is itself a story. It underscores how the AI boom has outgrown the balance sheets of even the chip industry's most formidable players, and how uncertain even insiders appear about the ultimate scale of the undertaking.

The structure builds on recent precedent. Broadcom had already arranged a $35 billion deal with Apollo and Blackstone, and the new package would represent a significant step up in ambition. JPMorgan has warned explicitly about "phantom leverage" — debt that doesn't show up in traditional balance-sheet metrics because it's parked in off-balance-sheet vehicles. Moody's and S&P have reportedly flagged similar contingent liability concerns.

Bond Markets Vote With Their Wallets

The credit market's response has been unambiguous. Broadcom's five-year credit default swaps widened by 28 basis points in August, while the yield on the company's 5.15 percent notes due 2031 climbed 14 basis points. For a company long regarded as a model of balance-sheet discipline, that marks a notable shift in perception.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?

The rating agencies have taken notice. Bank of America downgraded Broadcom's issuer and bond rating from Overweight to Marketweight on August 14. Analyst Tom Curcuruto cited potential senior obligations that could arise from Broadcom's XPV financing platform for AI chips through mid-2029. That was roughly a week and a half ago — and the debate over the financing's size has only intensified since.

A Second Front: Google's Wandering Eye

Complicating matters is a development that landed almost simultaneously: Google has expanded its custom chip partnership with Marvell Technology, a deal documented in a filing that includes stock options worth approximately $12.2 billion to Google. For Broadcom, whose TPU business with Google forms a central growth pillar, the news landed like a shock — the stock came under immediate pressure.

To be sure, subsequent reports pointed to stabilization, noting that Alphabet had already signed a long-term agreement with Broadcom in April covering future TPU generations and the supply of Google AI racks through 2031. But the message had been delivered: Broadcom's most important AI customer is diversifying its supplier base, and the company is no longer without competition.

The Operating Story Remains Strong

None of this diminishes the operational picture. Broadcom reported record quarterly revenue of $22.1 billion, up 48 percent year over year, with non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.44 versus $1.58 in the prior-year period. The company's backlog stands at $164.6 billion in firm committed orders, roughly 30 percent of which is expected to convert to revenue within twelve months. Gross margins came in at 69 percent, with the product business growing 64 percent. Partnerships with OpenAI and Meta continue to underpin the AI positioning.

The analyst consensus remains constructive — "Moderate Buy" to "Strong Buy," with price targets ranging from $491.97 to $509.30, well above current levels. The stock trades roughly 28 percent below its 52-week high of 429.60 euros, reached in early June, and sits about 8.9 percent below its 50-day moving average. The RSI of 34.1 signals oversold conditions, typically a contrarian indicator for further downside, while volatility has run elevated at 43 percent on the year.

The Question Behind the Numbers

The gap between operational strength and share price performance is real — but it's not primarily about growth concerns. The market is wrestling with a more fundamental question: how much debt risk should a company be allowed to carry in order to finance exactly the kind of demand that its quarterly results so impressively demonstrate? At what point do creditors and rating agencies lose patience?

Broadcom will have an opportunity to address at least part of that question on September 2, after US market close, when it reports third fiscal quarter 2026 results. The conference call is scheduled for 5 PM Eastern Time. Until then, the tension between a compelling growth narrative and mounting balance-sheet anxiety will remain the defining theme — and the terms at which that multibillion-dollar package ultimately gets signed will matter more to the stock's trajectory than any single day's trading on the Nasdaq.
