BP has moved to lock in production hardware for its Paleogene developments in the Gulf of America, signing a letter of intent with TechnipFMC that covers subsea production systems rated to 20,000 psi. The equipment maker disclosed the agreement yesterday, specifying that it was struck with BP Exploration & Production Inc. No contract value was attached to the announcement.

That absence of a price tag matters. A letter of intent sets out a framework for cooperation; it is not a supply contract with a booked order value, so neither a concrete investment figure for BP nor an incremental earnings contribution can be read into it. The distinction between an intended partnership and executed business should hold when investors weigh any eventual economic effect.

TechnipFMC said the arrangement covers subsea production trees for the high-pressure systems, aimed squarely at BP's Paleogene projects in the Gulf of America rather than a broad technical exchange. For the upstream portfolio, that gives a named outlet for production equipment. It does not amount to a completed equipment purchase.

Earnings Forecast Sits Alongside Impairment Bill

More tangible near-term signals come from a Reuters report also published yesterday, which pointed to adjusted profit of more than $7 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the second quarter. Refining, together with gas marketing and trading, was cited as the expected driver.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?

Those figures are projections, not reported quarterly results — a gap that carries weight given what BP has separately flagged. In its trading statement roughly a week ago, the company guided to post-tax impairments of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion for the third quarter of 2026, concentrated in the gas business and in low-carbon transition activities. A stronger operating performance would not make those charges vanish from the accounts.

The same trading statement projected a sharp reduction in net debt, to a range of $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion, against $22.3 billion at the end of the second quarter. Like the earnings figure, this is guidance rather than a final reported number.

Three Threads for Investors to Separate

What emerges is a set of moving parts that pull in different directions: a possible profit increase, an anticipated deleveraging, and substantial write-downs on existing engagements. The TechnipFMC letter of intent adds a project-level element to that picture but offers no financial confirmation of its own, and it does nothing to offset the impairments or to set their scale.

BP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

BP will report third-quarter 2026 results on October 30. A strategy and outlook update is scheduled for December 15 in New York. Those two dates are the next announced markers against which investors can judge both earnings momentum and the direction of the wider strategy.
