BP Shares Touch 52-Week Peak as Refining Margins and Debt Reduction Reshape the Investment Case

BP's stock climbed 3.2% to EUR 7.40 on Friday, setting a fresh 52-week high as investors rotated into defensive energy names amid a sell-off in technology shares that left London's broader indices on course for weekly gains, according to Reuters.

The advance came against a supportive backdrop for the entire oil and gas complex, with Brent crude prices rising on mounting concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. BP closed the session at EUR 7.39, just below the EUR 7.42 intraday peak reached earlier in the day. The move extends a remarkable run: the shares are now up 51% since the start of the year.

Refining Margins Nearly Triple

The strongest fundamental catalyst emerged from BP's third-quarter interim report, which flagged a refining indicator margin of $46.70 per barrel — a dramatic jump from $29.60 in the second quarter and $15.8 in the year-earlier period. Management expects the improved realized refining margins to contribute between $1.9 billion and $2.1 billion to quarterly results.

Gas marketing and trading are also showing a clear pickup compared with the prior quarter, adding a second engine of earnings growth.

Debt Reduction Takes Center Stage

Perhaps the most striking element of the update is the projected reduction in net debt. BP guided toward net debt of $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion as of the September 30 reporting date, down sharply from $22.3 billion at the end of the second quarter — a swing of roughly $8 billion in three months.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?

That improvement in the balance sheet gives the company considerably more room to maneuver as it navigates its restructuring.

Impairments to Weigh on Headline Results

Offsetting the operational momentum are substantial post-tax write-downs of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion, concentrated in the company's gas and low-carbon energy division and its transformation activities. The charges relate primarily to the group's restructuring efforts and will temper the net result when full figures are released.

On the production side, BP is targeting upstream output of 2.19 million to 2.24 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in the third quarter.

Strategic Reserve Swap Bolsters Gulf Operations

In North America, BP America secured approval from the U.S. Department of Energy on October 10 for a swap of up to two million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The arrangement is designed to bridge weather-related production losses in the Gulf of Mexico following hurricanes, with BP obligated to return the borrowed volume in 2027 along with a contractually agreed premium.

Separately, the company disclosed that executives Kate Thomson, Gordon Birrell, Sam Skerry and Michael Sosso acquired ordinary shares outside a trading venue through the BP ShareMatch UK Plan on Monday.

What Comes Next

Investors will get the full picture on October 30, 2026, when BP publishes detailed third-quarter results. A further strategic milestone follows on December 15, 2026, in New York City, where the company plans to present its strategy and outlook.
