BP Shares Rally 3.1% as Hormuz Supply Fears Lift Crude — and a $8 Billion Debt Cut Reshapes the Balance Sheet
Published on 10/19/2026 at 05:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deBP's stock climbed 3.1% on Friday to close at €7.39, a move that pushed the shares back within touching distance of their 52-week high of €7.42. The advance was powered less by company-specific news than by a broad updraft across the European energy sector, as crude prices jumped on renewed worries about supply disruptions in the Middle East.
Brent crude settled at $109.86 a barrel, according to media reports, with traders focused on potential interruptions to flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Supporting the rally were US crude inventory figures that showed a larger-than-expected drawdown. As an integrated energy major, BP captured the benefit directly, and the gains rippled across the wider European oil complex.
A Leaner Balance Sheet
The market's attention is also fixed on the state of BP's finances ahead of its full third-quarter report, due on 30 October 2026. In interim guidance, management projected net debt would fall to between $13.5 billion and $14.5 billion by the end of the quarter — down sharply from $22.3 billion at the close of the second quarter, a reduction of roughly $8 billion.
That improvement in leverage comes alongside accounting charges that will weigh on the quarterly result. BP expects post-tax impairments of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion, concentrated in its gas business and its low-carbon energy operations.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?
Gulf Storms and a Strategic Reserve Loan
Operationally, the company has been navigating weather-related disruption in the Gulf of Mexico. On 10 October, the US Department of Energy approved a loan of up to 2 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to subsidiary BP America, after hurricane activity curtailed production in the region. Under the arrangement, BP will return the borrowed volumes — plus additional barrels — to the reserve in 2027.
On the alternative-energy front, Lightsource bp and partner Contact Energy officially commissioned the K?whai Park solar farm in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Thursday. The project has a capacity of 150MWac and is expected to generate 275GWh of electricity annually.
Leadership Schedule Disrupted
Geopolitical tensions also intruded on the executive calendar. BP chief executive Meg O'Neill was forced to cancel her appearance at the World Petroleum Council Energy Congress in Riyadh after a rocket attack on an airport disrupted air travel. A company spokesperson told Reuters that BP had made every effort to secure her attendance but that being there in person proved impossible.
Separately, filings disclosed share purchases by senior executives under the company's BP ShareMatch UK employee programme, with finance chief Kate Thomson among those adding to their holdings of ordinary shares.
Two Dates to Watch
Investors will get the full picture of third-quarter trading on 30 October 2026, when BP publishes its complete quarterly report. Strategic direction comes a little later: on 15 December 2026, O'Neill will present a strategy and outlook update in New York City.
