BP Shares Close In on 52-Week High as Crude Rally Meets a Leaner Balance Sheet
Published on 10/17/2026 at 17:32 | Editorial boerse-global.deBP's equity jumped 3.1% on Friday to finish at EUR 7.39, pulling within touching distance of its 52-week peak of EUR 7.42 as a broad rally in crude lifted integrated energy names across the board. The advance came against a backdrop of mounting anxiety over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East and uncertainty surrounding Russian diesel deliveries — a combination that pushed Brent up 2.9% and sent the US WTI benchmark above the $100-a-barrel mark.
The geopolitical backdrop turned concrete for BP earlier in the week. According to Reuters, the company's leadership was unable to attend the World Petroleum Council Energy Congress in Riyadh as planned after an attack on the Saudi capital's international airport on Sunday. Traders heading into the weekend focused squarely on risks that could tighten global supply, and the expectation that sustained crude prices would underpin upstream earnings gave the British major an extra tailwind.
Refining Margins Nearly Double
Operationally, the picture emerging from BP's third-quarter interim guidance is one of sharp improvement in downstream economics. The refinery indicator margin climbed to $46.70 per barrel, up from $29.6 in the second quarter, and the segment's contribution to group performance is estimated at $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion.
That refining strength coincides with a marked deleveraging. BP guided to net debt of $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion at the end of the quarter, down from $22.3 billion at the close of the prior period — a reduction of roughly $8 billion that reshapes the balance sheet ahead of the full results.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?
Not everything is pointing in the same direction. The company expects post-tax impairments of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion, weighted mainly toward its gas and low-carbon energy units, a charge that will temper headline earnings when the official third-quarter report lands on 30 October 2026. A strategy and outlook update is scheduled for 15 December 2026.
Upstream Guidance and a Mixed Trading Picture
On the production side, BP projected upstream output of 2,190 to 2,240 mboe/d for the quarter. Gas trading is expected to come in well above the prior quarter's level, while results in the customer-facing business look set to weaken noticeably.
Renewables continue to expand in parallel. On Thursday, Lightsource bp — the company's joint venture — and Contact Energy opened the K?whai Park solar farm at Christchurch Airport in New Zealand. The facility carries 150 MWac of capacity, equivalent to 168 MWdc, and is designed to generate roughly 275 GWh of electricity annually.
For investors, Friday's move reflects a market pricing in both halves of the BP story: a commodity rally that flatters the oil and gas business, and a debt load that has shrunk considerably since the second quarter. The impairments serve as a reminder that the low-carbon transition still carries a price tag — one that will be itemized in full at the end of October.
