BP's Kirkuk Handover and Refining Rebound Converge Ahead of October 30 Results
Published on 10/18/2026 at 06:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deBP shares climbed 3.1% on Friday to close at EUR 7.39, leaving the stock just 0.3% shy of its 52-week high of EUR 7.42. The advance came as crude prices firmed sharply: Brent settled 3.7% higher at $109.86 a barrel, according to Reuters, lifted by supply anxieties surrounding the Middle East and uncertainty over Russian diesel exports. Renewed tensions around shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, alongside continuing military conflict in the region, pushed risk premiums higher across the energy complex, and several oil and gas names booked gains alongside BP.
Operationally, the company had its own news flow. A consortium led by BP — with ConocoPhillips and TPAO as partners — took over the operating management of four oil fields in Iraq's Kirkuk region. The venture is targeting output of 450,000 barrels of oil per day together with 500 million standard cubic feet of associated gas. Separately, joint venture Lightsource bp announced on Thursday the opening of the K?whai Park solar farm in Christchurch, New Zealand, a 150 MWac facility expected to generate 275 GWh of electricity annually.
Refining Margins Set to Double
The interim trading statement for the third quarter, released days ago, pointed to a marked improvement in the Products segment. Higher realised refining margins are expected to lift results by $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion versus the prior quarter, with an indicator margin of $46.7/bbl against $29.6/bbl three months earlier.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?
Net debt is guided to a range of $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion at the end of the third quarter, a steep reduction from $22.3 billion at the close of the second. Offsetting that brighter picture, BP flagged post-tax impairments of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion, concentrated in its gas and low-carbon energy transition businesses.
Investors are weighing those write-downs against the supply-side support from geopolitics, while the longer-running debate over capital allocation — fossil fuel projects versus lower-emission activities — continues to dominate the investment case.
Two Dates to Watch
Hard numbers arrive on October 30, 2026, when BP publishes its full third-quarter results. Management has also scheduled a strategy and outlook update in New York City for December 15, 2026. In the meantime, several executives, including CFO Kate Thomson, picked up small quantities of BP stock through the UK employee share programme ShareMatch.
