BP shares climbed 3.1% to EUR 7.39 on Friday, with the stock touching a fresh 52-week high of EUR 7.40 — a 3.2% advance on the day — as investors seized on the energy major's third-quarter trading update and its sharply improved balance sheet. The move came as London markets tilted toward defensive names, with British indices on course for weekly gains as market participants rotated out of technology stocks, according to Reuters. BP has now gained 51% since the start of the year.

Net debt set to halve

The standout item in the update is a planned reduction in net debt to a range of $13.5bn to $14.5bn by the September 30 reporting date, down from $22.3bn at the end of the second quarter. That consolidation is running ahead of expectations and gives management noticeably more room to manoeuvre.

Refining margins nearly double

Downstream operations provided the operational thrust behind the numbers. BP's indicative refining margin averaged $46.70 per barrel in the third quarter, up from $29.60 in the prior three months. The company expects the stronger realised margins to deliver a positive contribution of between $1.9bn and $2.1bn. A firmer gas trading performance added further support to the result.

Write-downs fail to dent appetite

Offsetting those gains are post-tax impairments of $3.0bn to $4.5bn, concentrated in the gas and low-carbon energies division and the group's transformation activities. Investors looked past the charges, prioritising the deleveraging and resilient operating performance over the hit to the balance sheet.

Brazil probe and production guidance

Exploration news also drew attention. BP encountered traces of oil at its first exploration well in Brazil's Tupinambá block offshore and notified the relevant regulator, though whether the find is commercially viable has yet to be established. Upstream production for the third quarter is targeted at between 2,190 and 2,240 mboe/d.

Insider buying and key dates

In a separate disclosure, executives Kate Thomson, Gordon Birrell, Sam Skerry and Michael Sosso acquired ordinary shares off-market through the BP ShareMatch UK Plan on Monday. Full third-quarter results are due on October 30, 2026, with a strategy and business outlook event scheduled for December 15, 2026 in New York City.
