BP shares advanced 3.1% on Friday to close at EUR 7.39, settling just below the stock's 52-week high of EUR 7.42. Two distinct forces converged behind the move: a sharp rally in crude prices and a quarterly update that revealed both a dramatic strengthening in refining economics and a substantial paydown of debt.

Brent crude climbed to $109.86 a barrel by the closing bell, according to media reports, as renewed concerns about supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz rattled energy markets. A larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories added further support. As an integrated energy major, BP benefited directly from the improved sector backdrop, which lifted the broader European oil complex.

Refining Margins Nearly Double

The company's third-quarter interim update, however, offered the more consequential signal for the investment case. BP pegged its headline refining margin at $46.70 per barrel for the period, up sharply from $29.60 in the second quarter of 2026. That improvement is expected to boost Products segment results by $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion compared with the prior quarter.

The balance sheet tells an equally striking story. Net debt is projected to fall to between $13.5 billion and $14.5 billion by the end of the third quarter, down from $22.3 billion at the close of the second — a reduction of roughly $8 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?

Those gains come alongside significant one-off charges. BP guided to post-tax impairments of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion, concentrated in the gas division and the low-carbon energy transition businesses. The robust refining earnings should absorb much of that hit at the operating level.

Upstream production for the third quarter is targeted at a narrowed range of 2,190 to 2,240 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day. Full financial and production figures are due on October 30, 2026.

Analysts Stay on the Sidelines

Despite the operational momentum, sell-side sentiment remains cautious. Jefferies reaffirmed its "Hold" rating and a price target of GBP 5.20 on October 13. Bank of America nudged its target slightly higher the following day, from 510 GBp to 525 GBp, while keeping an "Underperform" recommendation on the stock.

Attention now shifts to December 15, when CEO Meg O'Neill will present a strategy and medium-term outlook update in New York. O'Neill was recently unable to attend the World Petroleum Council Energy Congress in Riyadh in person after a rocket attack disrupted airport travel; BP said it had made every effort to secure her presence but that on-site attendance proved impossible. In separate disclosures, several executives — including finance chief Kate Thomson — acquired additional ordinary shares under the company's BP ShareMatch UK employee program.
