BP Lifts Guidance on Debt, Refining as Crude Surge Pushes Shares Toward 52-Week High
Published on 10/17/2026 at 19:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deBP shares climbed 3.1% to EUR 7.39 on Friday, pulling within striking distance of their 52-week high of EUR 7.42, as a sharp rally in crude prices swept through the integrated energy sector.
The advance came as Brent crude rose 2.9% and the U.S. benchmark WTI pushed above $100 a barrel, driven by mounting concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East. The geopolitical backdrop hit close to home for BP: according to Reuters, the company's leadership was unable to attend the World Petroleum Council Energy Congress in Riyadh as planned after an attack on the Saudi capital's international airport the previous Sunday.
Refining Margins Nearly Double as Debt Falls
Alongside the oil-price tailwind, BP's own third-quarter trading update has given investors plenty to chew on. The company guided net debt down to a range of $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion, a steep drop from $22.3 billion at the end of the second quarter. Refining margins are also improving sharply, with the indicator margin expected to come in at $46.7 per barrel, up from $29.6 in the prior quarter — a sequential gain management pegs at $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion.
Upstream production is targeted at 2.190 million to 2.240 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, while a firmer gas trading performance is expected to underpin operating results.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?
Offsetting that picture are substantial special items. BP has flagged post-tax impairments of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion, concentrated in the gas business and low-carbon operations — a charge that underscores the cost of the group's transformation.
Solar Park Opens in New Zealand
Beyond the oil and gas core, BP continues to build out its renewable generation capacity. On Thursday, Contact Energy and subsidiary Lightsource bp inaugurated the K?whai Park solar farm in Christchurch, New Zealand. The facility has a capacity of 150 megawatts AC, or 168 megawatts DC, and is expected to generate around 275 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.
