The Bavarian automaker has quietly crossed a threshold that puts it firmly ahead of its German rivals in the electric vehicle race — but the market's attention is already drifting toward what happens next month.

BMW has now delivered two million fully electric vehicles since 2013, with the landmark car — an i5 M60 xDrive — rolling off the line at the Dingolfing plant. The achievement gives the company a comfortable lead over domestic competitors: Audi has delivered roughly 900,000 EVs since launch, while Mercedes sits at around 800,000. The flexible manufacturing strategy, which BMW calls "Power of Choice," allows the company to build different drivetrains on the same production lines, a structural advantage that analysts say has helped accelerate the EV ramp-up.

Yet the stock's reaction tells a more complicated story. Shares closed Friday at €62.70, up 5.0 percent on the day and 7.8 percent for the week — a solid run that reflects growing optimism around the company's trajectory. But Monday's session saw the shares slip 0.6 percent to €62.30, a sign that the market is waiting for something more concrete than operational milestones.

That something is the Capital Markets Day scheduled for late September, the first major strategic event under the company's new leadership. Citigroup has placed BMW on its "Positive Catalyst Watch" list, with analyst Harald Hendrikse flagging a 90-day window for favorable headlines ahead of the event. The bank's rating remains "Neutral" — a cautious positioning that suggests Citigroup sees upside potential but isn't yet ready to issue a full-throated buy recommendation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

The analyst community is otherwise split. Deutsche Bank Research reaffirmed its "Buy" rating with a €90 price target in early August, while Goldman Sachs trimmed its target to €82 but kept its buy recommendation. Jefferies sits at "Hold" with a €70 target, and RBC downgraded the stock to "Sector Perform" with a reduced target of €60. The wide range of targets — from €60 to €90 — underscores the uncertainty surrounding the company's strategic direction.

The operational picture, however, is strengthening. European BEV sales jumped 38 percent in the second quarter to 81,445 vehicles, and the new iX3 from the "Neue Klasse" platform is proving particularly popular. One in three electric BMWs ordered in Europe is now an iX3, with orders approaching the 100,000 mark. The model's appeal extends beyond Europe: in China, tens of thousands of orders have already been placed even though no demonstration vehicles are available yet — customers there are paying roughly €510 in deposits to secure a delivery slot. Deliveries in China begin in November, with the broader market launch following next year. In Brazil, the iX3 50 xDrive is available for pre-order for the 2026/2027 period, with deliveries slated to start in September 2026.

Bernstein Research has maintained its "Outperform" rating with a price target of €82, pointing to consensus earnings estimates for 2028 that imply 81 percent EPS growth versus 2026, at a current price-to-earnings ratio of around 5. That valuation gap is what draws value-oriented investors to the story.

Technically, the €62 level has emerged as a critical support zone. Holding above it could open the path toward resistance between €65.20 and €69.80, according to market observers. To the downside, the July low of €56.40 — also the 52-week trough — offers support, sitting roughly 10 percent below current levels. The 52-week high of €97.90, reached in December, remains 36 percent away, a reminder of how far the stock has fallen from its peak.

The stock is down 33 percent since the start of the year, a bruising stretch that has left many investors skeptical. But the combination of accelerating EV deliveries, the iX3's early success, and the prospect of strategic clarity at the Capital Markets Day is beginning to shift the narrative. The question now is whether the new leadership can convert operational momentum into a convincing strategic vision — and whether the market's patience will hold until then.
