BMW's Severance Offer Closes Early While Shenyang Battery Lines Roll
Published on 10/21/2026 at 03:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deBMW's voluntary severance programme in Germany has shut its doors ahead of schedule, with the company confirming it hit its target sooner than planned after thousands of employees expressed interest. The news, reported in the media yesterday, came as the shares added 2.2% — though no direct link between the personnel measure and the price move has been established.
That distinction matters. A severance scheme reaching its goal says something about the programme, not about operating profitability, and the day's friendly share price offers no proof either way. Investors are still weighing cautious expectations for the car business itself.
Two Analysts, Two Notes, One Cautious Street
Jefferies reaffirmed its "Hold" rating and a price target of 60 euros in a study published Monday. Analyst Philippe Houchois expects a 7% revenue decline in the automotive business for the third quarter of 2026. RBC Capital Markets trimmed its target from 60 to 58 euros on 14 October, keeping a "Sector Perform" rating, with analyst Tom Narayan pointing to headwinds in China.
The softness in China sits behind that restraint. BMW, for its part, reported growth in Europe and the United States — a regional split that argues against reading a group-wide turnaround into any single piece of good news. For the first nine months of 2026, the BMW Group delivered 1,707,799 vehicles worldwide, a decline of 4.9% from the prior-year period.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?
A Mixed Delivery Picture With an Electric Bright Spot
Third-quarter figures tell a similar two-speed story. BMW delivered 551,072 vehicles in Q3 2026, down 6.3% year on year, while Europe and the US posted gains. The electric business outpaced the total: fully electric BMW Group deliveries reached 110,257 units in the quarter, up 7.2%, and in Europe every third vehicle handed to a customer was fully electric, according to a company statement.
Production is moving in step with that electrification push. On Thursday, BMW began series production of Gen6 high-voltage batteries in Shenyang. The new round cells, per BMW, deliver more than 20% higher energy density and charge up to 30% faster — technical improvements that do not yet carry any statement about their contribution to earnings.
Political Tailwind, With a Caveat
German auto stocks drew support on Friday from the prospect of looser rules for combustion engines. According to a Tagesschau report, a German-French agreement to soften the planned combustion-engine phase-out lifted the sector, and BMW numbered among the DAX gainers, rising 2.4% on the day. That describes a friendlier industry backdrop, not an automatic explanation for the share price move — political relief is a different thing from improved sales and earnings.
BMW at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The personnel programme and the delivery trend operate on different levels of the company. What will sharpen the picture is the quarterly statement scheduled for 4 November 2026, when investors can measure the actual business numbers against those cautious analyst forecasts. Until then, the split remains: shrinking overall deliveries set against electric growth and battery-production progress, with the political debate supplying an extra sector impulse.
