Three brokers trimmed their price targets for BMW on the same day, yet their recommendations still span the full range from buy to reduce. The new marks run from EUR 52 to EUR 66, and the stock closed Tuesday at EUR 60.80, down 0.3% — squarely inside that spread.

Kepler Cheuvreux now carries the lowest target after cutting to EUR 56 from EUR 58, media reports indicated, while reiterating its reduce rating. ODDO BHF moved to EUR 52 from EUR 55 and kept its neutral stance. Deutsche Bank Research, at the other end, lowered its target to EUR 66 from EUR 71 but stood by its buy call, with analyst Tim Rokossa framing the case around the restructuring and the recovery expected to follow it.

The trigger for all three moves was Wednesday's guidance cut. BMW now projects a reported EBIT margin in its automotive segment of between ?0.5% and +0.5% for 2026, down from the 1% to 3% range it had previously targeted.

One-off charges and a softer delivery outlook

At the root of the revision is a decision by the management board on Wednesday to broaden and deepen its portfolio and structural measures. According to the company, these will weigh on automotive segment earnings in the fourth quarter on a non-operating basis, shaving roughly 2.5 percentage points off the full-year EBIT margin.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

Deliveries are heading the same way. BMW had been guiding for a slight decline; it now expects a moderate drop of 5% to just under 10% in 2026. Reuters linked the fresh downgrade to the accelerated restructuring and to weaker demand in China, where third-quarter 2026 deliveries fell 24.8%.

Free cash flow is the one line the carmaker left untouched. BMW reaffirmed on Tuesday its expectation of more than EUR 2.5bn in the automotive segment.

A 3.4% margin as the yardstick

The scale of the downgrade becomes clear against the most recent quarter. BMW reported group revenue of EUR 30,452m for the third quarter of 2026, with pre-tax profit of EUR 2,083m and a corresponding margin of 6.8%. The automotive segment still managed an EBIT margin of 3.4% in that period. Group net profit for the first nine months of 2026 came to EUR 4,320m.

BMW at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Read against those figures, the new full-year automotive margin band of ?0.5% to +0.5% implies the car business barely earns its cost of capital in 2026, even with the hit attributed to the fourth-quarter structural measures. The fourth quarter in the automotive segment is where the argument will be settled.
