BMW shares hover just above their 52-week low as UBS forecasts a 3%-5% automotive margin for 2028, ahead of the automaker's Capital Markets Day.

BMW shareholders have little room to breathe ahead of the Munich automaker's Capital Markets Day, with the stock hovering just above its 52-week low as analysts sharpen their pencils on the group's medium-term ambitions. The shares slipped 1.4% to EUR 55.20 on Monday, leaving them barely above the EUR 55.12 trough, before recovering modestly in a separate session to trade 0.9% lower at EUR 55.46.

The event, expected at the end of September, has become a referendum on management's ability to reconcile hefty future spending with acceptable returns. Investors are pressing for concrete guardrails covering electrification, profitability and the gruelling Chinese market, where Western carmakers have been ceding ground at an accelerating pace.

UBS Takes a Cautious Line on 2028 Targets

Swiss bank UBS weighed in on Thursday with a downbeat read on BMW's longer-range earnings power, projecting an automotive operating margin of just 3% to 5% for 2028 — a forecast that sits below the consensus. The analysts argue that management, having already been forced into a profit warning, is likely to adopt a more defensive posture when it sets its medium-term objectives.

That June warning stemmed largely from faster-than-expected market share losses in the Far East, a trend underscored by repeated downward revisions from the China Passenger Car Association. Restructuring and cost-cutting measures are simultaneously weighing on results in the current half-year, though the company intends for them to fortify its cost base for periods to come.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

A Credibility Test With 70-Euro Price Targets

Not everyone is bearish. UBS analyst Patrick Hummel, who issued his note on 24 September, kept a "Neutral" rating with a EUR 70 price target, flagging the Capital Markets Day as the pivotal catalyst for BMW's valuation. Jefferies' Philippe Houchois struck a similar tone the same day, maintaining "Hold" and also setting a EUR 70 target, but framing the gathering as an outright credibility test for the leadership after a bruising stretch.

More optimistic voices exist further up the range: other September research carries price targets as high as EUR 82, paired with buy recommendations. According to media reports, these bulls contend that BMW now stands on firmer expectations footing following the June warning, and that the peak of its investment cycle lies behind it — a shift that could widen its financial latitude over the medium term.

Product Offensive Runs in Parallel

While the strategy debate dominates, BMW is pressing ahead with a sweeping model refresh. Reservations for the new i3 electric sedan open in the United States on Tuesday, followed on Wednesday by the world premiere of the next-generation 3 Series sedan, accompanied by a repositioned M Performance variant.

There has also been a boardroom reshuffle. Since 1 September, Dorothea von Boxberg has headed the Human Resources and Real Estate division, serving as Labour Director. On shareholder returns, the group is holding its line: a payout ratio of 30% to 40% of net income, alongside the ongoing share buyback programme, remains the dependable framework for investors.
