Scandium is not a peripheral concern. The global market for the metal runs to just 40 to 70 tons annually, yet demand is projected to reach 300 tons by 2030. The supply chain's fragility was underscored recently when Sunrise Energy Metals secured a conditional $400 million loan commitment from the U.S. Department of Defense for an Australian scandium project — whose capital costs have since ballooned to nearly four times original estimates. The market's mood was already sour before the legal headlines.
