BlackRock Adds to Renk Stake as Goldman Sachs Turns Bullish on the Defence Gear Maker

Institutional money is quietly repositioning itself around Renk Group, and the Augsburg-based transmission specialist is drawing fresh attention from two very different corners of the market. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, disclosed on Tuesday that it had lifted its voting rights in the defence supplier to 3.35%, up from 2.90% previously. Its total holding, however, stayed put at 4.13%.
The mandatory notification lands at a moment when the shareholder register is already in flux. UBS Group AG revealed on Wednesday that it had crossed a reporting threshold and now controls 5.08% of Renk's total voting rights — a commitment from a global heavyweight that market participants read as a vote of confidence in the company's medium-term prospects.
A Rebound From the Yearly Low
Price action has been equally restless. Renk shares climbed 5.5% on Friday to close at EUR 42.39, stretching the gap above the 52-week low back to 7.9%. No company-specific catalyst explained the gain; market watchers attributed it largely to a technical countermove following the prior losses, compounded by the mood swings that have repeatedly whipsawed European defence names in recent days.
A separate session saw the stock advance 5.0% to EUR 42.19, powered by a Goldman Sachs re-rating. The US investment bank upgraded the shares from neutral to buy and set a price target of EUR 65. Analyst Sam Burgess framed the call as an attractive entry point after the selloff, pointing to what he sees as high visibility on future earnings growth. In his view, the slump had pushed the valuation to a level that no longer does justice to the company's operating prospects.
Year-to-date, the stock is still down 22%, a reminder that institutional caution has not evaporated overnight.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?
Order Books Doing the Heavy Lifting
What underpins the bullish case is a backlog that keeps getting fatter. Group order intake in the first half reached EUR 1.195 billion — a record for that reporting period — while the order book stood at EUR 7.0 billion at the mid-year mark, as confirmed when management reiterated its annual guidance last Wednesday. The more recent tally puts the backlog at EUR 7.4 billion, more than four times a typical year's revenue and enough to keep the plants busy for years.
The Vehicle Mobility Solutions unit is doing much of the running. Order intake there jumped 43% to EUR 970 million in the first half, producing a book-to-bill ratio of 2.3 — meaning new orders are arriving at more than twice the rate the division is billing them out.
To keep pace with military demand, Renk ramped up production of tank transmissions roughly three weeks ago. The scale-up is meant to ensure that incoming large orders are processed on schedule and that capacity holds up for future defence programmes.
Margins and the Execution Test
If the manufacturing ramp proceeds as planned, the earnings leverage could be considerable. Greater scale in gearboxes for heavy tracked and wheeled vehicles promises meaningful efficiency gains across the plants. Market observers project the adjusted operating margin rising to 21.5% by the end of the decade, with the land vehicles segment seen reaching 24.9%. On that basis, Goldman Sachs models earnings per share growing by roughly 90% between 2025 and 2027.
For the full year, management continues to target revenue above EUR 1.5 billion and an adjusted operating result of between EUR 255 million and EUR 285 million.
What Could Derail the Story
Not everything points one way. Geopolitical dynamics cut both directions: should diplomatic talks or ceasefire initiatives gain traction, political pressure to keep raising defence budgets could ease and new orders could be delayed. On the operational side, clearing such a large backlog on time demands stable supply chains and enough skilled workers in mechanical engineering. Bottlenecks in electronic components or specialty steels would risk delivery delays and rework, denting the targeted margin improvement and rattling market confidence anew.
Technically, the recent low is the line to watch. As long as support there holds, the chance of continued base-building remains intact; a sustained break below it would threaten a resumption of the broader downtrend. To the upside, the EUR 65 analyst target serves as the key marker for a lasting trend reversal. The next concrete catalyst is the upcoming quarterly report, where management must demonstrate that strong demand is converting into revenue on schedule and that profitability in the core business is keeping up.
While the operating side runs to plan on a full order book, the share price for now remains shaped by the shifting positions of its largest shareholders.
