BKW's shares slide 23% YTD despite renewable expansion and storage deals, as tariff cuts and fading volatility raise margin concerns ahead of H1 results.

The Swiss energy group BKW has plenty of operational achievements to point to these days — it has hit its renewable expansion target ahead of schedule, locked in a major battery storage marketing deal and unveiled a new solar-linked pricing model. Yet the share price tells a different story, with the stock hovering just above a fresh 52-week low hit on Thursday.

At 139.60 euros, the equity sits barely above the 138.90-euro trough marked earlier this week, a far cry from the 198.20-euro peak reached on 23 October last year. The gap to that high stands at roughly 30 percent, and the year-to-date decline has reached 23 percent, placing BKW among the weaker performers in the European utilities space.

Tariff reduction raises margin questions

The market's caution is not rooted in operational weakness but in what the future earnings picture looks like. BKW has announced a roughly 29 percent reduction in energy tariffs for standard supply customers in 2027 — a cut that more than offsets a 5.9 percent rise in grid usage fees, leaving a typical household with a net saving of about 7.6 percent.

Analysts read the pricing move as a signal of intensifying margin pressure. In previous years, the company benefited handsomely from elevated volatility in energy markets, but those exceptional tailwinds are now fading, and the market is bracing for a normalisation of profitability toward more stable — but lower — margins.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BKW?

The tariff announcement follows the introduction of new regulatory parameters for dynamic grid tariffs in Switzerland at the start of the month, set by regulator ElCom. BKW is pairing the price cut with a new offering called "Sonne scheint", launching in 2027, which will give smart-meter customers discounts on electricity consumed during sunny afternoons — an incentive designed to absorb photovoltaic surplus into the grid.

Storage and grid investments take centre stage

On the flexibility front, BKW has quietly expanded its footprint. Through a tolling agreement signed in September 2025, the company has fully marketed the capacity of the 300-megawatt-hour battery storage facility in Hilgermissen, Lower Saxony — a deal that came to light in connection with a project closure between Zelestra and Centrica Energy. The asset now ranks among the larger components of BKW's flexibility portfolio.

The group has also flagged progress with grid operator Swissgrid on expanding network infrastructure to integrate renewable energy — work that is a prerequisite for dynamic pricing models like the solar tariff to function at scale. Without sufficient grid capacity, incentives for load shifting would have little practical effect.

All eyes on the half-year report

Investor attention now shifts to next week's half-year results, which will offer the first hard evidence of how deeply the energy price normalisation has cut into operating performance. The segments Energy Solutions and Infrastructure & Buildings are expected to draw particular scrutiny.

For longer-term shareholders, the dividend remains a key talking point. The market anticipates an increase to 3.99 Swiss francs per share, up from 3.80 francs in the prior year. Should management confirm that outlook during the analyst conference, it could provide some support to the share price at current levels.

Whether the strategic bets on storage, flexible tariffs and grid expansion will translate into a sustained recovery in the share price remains an open question — one that likely won't be answered until concrete financial figures for the new business areas start coming through.
