BitMine Shares Surge as Crypto Rally, Short Squeeze Reshape the Landscape

BitMine's stock is riding a wave of crypto-fueled momentum, with shares climbing sharply on Thursday as a powerful rally across digital assets and a short squeeze in the broader market lifted the company's treasury value. The stock was last trading at €18.62, up 7.4% from the previous close, though another report pegged the gain at 7.9% with the share price at €18.70.
The move comes as Ethereum, the cryptocurrency at the heart of BitMine's accumulation strategy, posted a dramatic 20% intraday surge on Wednesday. Bitcoin also broke through key psychological levels, crossing $71,000 in one account and briefly touching $69,300 in another, triggering a cascade of liquidations that forced short sellers to cover their positions.
The "Alchemy of 5%" Strategy
BitMine's approach has been singularly focused: amass a meaningful slice of the total Ethereum supply. The company now holds roughly 5.82 million ETH, representing about 4.8% of all Ethereum in circulation worldwide. That puts the firm within striking distance of its internal target, dubbed the "Alchemy of 5%" — a goal that requires roughly 220,000 more ETH to reach.
The accumulation has been steady and deliberate. In the week through August 16, BitMine added another 9,926 ETH to its holdings, bringing the total to exactly 5,815,164 ETH. Alongside its Ethereum stash, the company also carries about 210 Bitcoin on its balance sheet.
What makes these holdings work harder is the staking strategy. Approximately 87% of the Ethereum — precisely 5,067,309 ETH — is locked in staking, generating an estimated $250 million in annual income. The staking yield has been reported at both 2.9% and 2.61%, depending on the measurement date. Tom Lee, BitMine's chairman, has framed Ethereum as the foundational layer for artificial intelligence applications, underscoring why the company is so heavily concentrated in the asset.

Treasury Value Rebounds, But Losses Linger
The recent rally has meaningfully boosted the value of BitMine's digital reserves. The treasury — which includes digital assets, cash, and investments — was valued at $11.4 billion before the surge, but the Ethereum spike has pushed that figure to approximately $13.2 billion.
Still, the company's position is not without its bruises. BitMine invested a total of $19.49 billion in Ethereum at an average purchase price of $3,357.63 per coin, leaving the portfolio with unrealized losses despite the recent recovery.
The stock itself shows notable relative strength against its short-term trend, trading 29% above its 50-day moving average of €14.38. However, it remains 4.7% below its 200-day average. And even with Thursday's gains, the shares sit roughly 67% below their 52-week high of €56.50.
Buybacks and Valuation
BitMine has been deploying its liquidity on two fronts: accumulating crypto and repurchasing its own shares. The buyback program, authorized at up to $4 billion, has been active since July 1. In the past week alone, the company bought back 1.7 million shares, bringing the cumulative total to more than 20.8 million shares since the program began.
On valuation, the stock trades at a price-to-book ratio of 1.1x, well below the software industry average of 3.1x and the broader peer group. Analysts currently rate the shares a "Moderate Buy" with an average price target of $27.65.
Political Tailwinds and Market Dynamics
The broader crypto equity sector has been buoyed by a confluence of political and regulatory developments in the United States. Donald Trump announced plans for comprehensive government crypto purchases and signaled deregulation ahead. Reports of a White House crypto summit and progress on the CLARITY Act — legislation aimed at clarifying token regulation and agency responsibilities — have further bolstered investor sentiment.
BitMine at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The short squeeze that amplified Wednesday's move was substantial. Market reports indicate liquidations across the crypto market totaling approximately $3.3 billion, with $3 billion of that coming from short positions. A separate report put total liquidations at over $1 billion, highlighting the ferocity of the squeeze.
Institutional demand is also picking up. US crypto ETPs saw net inflows of nearly $1.3 billion from Monday through Wednesday, with roughly $289 million flowing into Ethereum-based products — a sign that the asset BitMine has bet its future on is gaining traction with mainstream investors.
While institutional investors have recently increased their stakes in BitMine, the company's fortunes remain tightly tied to the volatile digital asset market, leaving the stock exposed to the same swings that have defined the crypto cycle.
