Bitcoin has staged one of its most forceful recoveries of the year, climbing back above $80,000 for the first time since mid-May before settling at $79,293. The move caps a remarkable stretch that has seen the cryptocurrency gain 8.6% over the past week and roughly 24% on a monthly basis, with some data points now showing the token trading around 21% above its 50-day moving average.

The Squeeze That Fueled the Fire

The rally's engine was less about fresh buying power and more about the abrupt disappearance of selling pressure. Jim Ferraioli, head of crypto research and strategy at Charles Schwab, calculates that leveraged short positions worth $6.4 billion have been liquidated since last Wednesday. That followed an earlier wave on August 21, when CoinGlass data showed roughly $2.7 billion in bearish bets were forcibly closed out.

The mechanics are familiar to seasoned crypto observers: when shorts are squeezed, sellers are compelled to become buyers, amplifying upward momentum. The catalyst for this cascade came from an unexpected corner — the US Treasury Department announced on August 21 that it would significantly expand its buyback program for longer-dated securities, doubling the per-operation volume for ten-to-thirty-year paper from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. In the five days leading up to that announcement, Bitcoin had already surged from $62,836.88 to $77,226.96, a jump of roughly 23%.

ETFs Add Fuel

Institutional money has been flowing back into the asset class with unusual intensity. US spot Bitcoin ETFs have now attracted more than $3 billion in August inflows, propelled by a historic run of eight consecutive trading days of net additions totaling $2.8 billion — the longest such streak since April.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bitcoin?

The wave began with a single powerful week: $1.92 billion poured into US spot Bitcoin ETFs over seven days, the largest weekly intake since October. BlackRock's IBIT fund played a central role, pulling in several hundred million dollars on individual days. Earlier in the month, the funds recorded $517 million in net inflows on August 19 — the biggest single-day haul since early May — followed by another $600 million the next day, building on $297.5 million and $186.4 million inflows on August 17 and 18 respectively.

Regulatory Tailwinds

Washington has been busy on the crypto front. The SEC proposed new rules on August 18 under the banner "Regulation Crypto Assets," creating a bespoke framework for certain investment contracts involving digital assets. The proposal includes two exemptions from Securities Act of 1933 registration requirements, among them a one-time allowance for offerings of up to $5 million within a four-year period.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission's innovation advisory committee met for the first time, with crypto regulation high on the agenda. The Treasury Department has also floated rules to implement the GENIUS Act, with a 60-day public comment period and final rules targeted for January 2027. Meanwhile, the CLARITY Act — a broader legislative effort to regulate digital assets — had yet to pass a Senate vote as of August 9, despite Majority Leader John Thune's commitment to schedule one before the summer recess.

Infrastructure Builds Out

Corporate America is deepening its embrace. Citi announced plans to launch a Bitcoin custody solution under the Custody+ brand this year, embedding the cryptocurrency into the same framework the bank uses for equities and bonds. Metaplanet unveiled a US Treasury platform linked to 2,100 Bitcoin, while Kraken expanded access to US equities for customers in the European Economic Area.

Not every headline was rosy: Binance terminated transaction processing for the HTX platform and ten other exchanges, underscoring ongoing consolidation in the trading segment beyond the major ETF providers.

A Cautious Scorecard

Despite the euphoria, Bitcoin remains 37% below its all-time high of $126,198.07 set in October 2025. The token is still down 10% year-to-date and 29% below its level twelve months ago. The Relative Strength Index sits at 80.9, signaling overbought conditions that could invite pullbacks after such a rapid ascent. With annualized 30-day volatility at 36%, the market's capacity for sudden reversals remains as pronounced as ever.
