BioNTech closed out a crowded October with a mixed set of oncology readouts that sketch both the promise and the limits of its cancer pipeline. The German biotech, working alongside Bristol Myers Squibb, reported a confirmed objective response rate of 36.7% for the combination of pumitamig and docetaxel in advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The data, unveiled on October 25 and presented at the ESMO Congress 2026, come from the Phase 2 ROSETTA Lung-107 trial.

The study enrolled patients whose disease had progressed following first-line treatment with immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Early median progression-free survival stood at 6.9 months, a measure of time without disease progression that should not be conflated with overall survival. Notably, the companies tested pumitamig in combination with docetaxel rather than as a monotherapy.

A Breast-Cancer Pact With Gilead

BioNTech's ambitions for pumitamig extend beyond lung cancer. Roughly two weeks before the lung data, the company and Gilead Sciences announced a clinical collaboration and supply agreement to study the drug alongside Gilead's sacituzumab govitecan. The planned global Phase 3 ROSETTA Breast-01 trial will target first-line treatment of locally advanced or metastatic triple-negative breast cancer with low or absent PD-L1 expression. BioNTech is set to fund and lead the study, subject to regulatory approval of the planned protocol amendment, while Gilead will supply its agent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

The picture grows more nuanced elsewhere in the portfolio. In the Phase 3 DYNASTY-Breast02 study, trastuzumab pamirtecan—developed with DualityBio—met its primary endpoint against physician's choice of chemotherapy. The progression-free survival benefit was statistically significant but modest, and overall survival data remained immature. Both partners characterized the potential benefit as limited within the current treatment landscape. BioNTech also flagged a higher incidence of interstitial lung disease than seen in earlier trials, including severe and fatal cases. The companies plan to review the data before determining next steps.

An mRNA Setback

Separately, BioNTech's experimental mRNA cancer immunotherapy BNT113 stumbled. According to media reports, the Phase 2/3 AHEAD-MERIT trial missed the first of its two primary endpoints—progression-free survival—on October 13.

Investors will get their next formal update when BioNTech reports third-quarter 2026 results and holds a corporate update on November 3, 2026. A conference call with a simultaneous webcast is scheduled for 14:00 Central European Time.
