BioNTech's Founders Head for the Exit as Plant Closures and US Litigation Reshape the Story

BioNTech founders plan to leave at end of 2026 as the company shuts three German sites and faces unresolved mRNA patent litigation in Delaware.

BioNTech is navigating one of the most consequential stretches in its short history, and the market is responding with caution rather than conviction. The stock was quoted at 86.05 euros, with pre-market indications at 86.10 euros — a level that sits 1.8 percent above its 200-day moving average of 84.61 euros, yet still roughly 19 percent below its 52-week high of 105.80 euros.

At the heart of the uncertainty is the departure of the two people most closely identified with the Mainz-based biotech group. Co-founders U?ur ?ahin and Özlem Türeci intend to leave the company at the end of 2026, and according to a Handelsblatt report dated 24 September, the separation process has not been frictionless. Disagreements have surfaced over patents, financial resources and staff as the two sides work through the terms of the split.

The pair have already established a new venture in Mainz called Arife, first reported by Tagesschau on 24 September. That company is expected to focus on developing next-generation mRNA-based pharmaceuticals — a remit that overlaps with the very field BioNTech helped pioneer. For a business that rode the global rollout of its Covid-19 vaccine to worldwide prominence, the loss of its founding leadership marks a profound break with its recent past.

Complicating the picture further, share sales by CEO ?ahin came to light about a week ago. The transactions were executed under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan established on 3 June 2026, a mechanism that carries out disposals according to predetermined parameters rather than discretionary timing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

Industrial Footprint Shrinks as Buyer Search Fails

Alongside the leadership transition, BioNTech is pressing ahead with hard operational cuts. Having failed to find buyers for its German vaccine facilities, the company will shut its sites in Tübingen, Marburg and Idar-Oberstein. Tübingen is slated to close by the end of 2027, followed by Marburg in early 2028 and Idar-Oberstein at the end of 2028.

Together with a location in Singapore, the measures affect as many as 1,860 positions. Management has agreed with the works council on socially compatible arrangements and additional severance terms. The restructuring reflects the group's effort to align its cost base with waning demand now that the pandemic-era surge in business has faded.

A Legal Front That Refuses to Clear

Adding to the pressure, litigation in the United States remains unresolved. A federal court in Delaware rejected motions from BioNTech, Pfizer and Moderna seeking dismissal of patent claims brought by Monsanto, a Bayer subsidiary. The dispute centres on mRNA technologies used by the companies. Since that ruling roughly a week ago, the stock has shed 1.4 percent as the case proceeds through the courts.

Oncology Data Offers a Counterweight

Not everything points in one direction. About two weeks ago, BioNTech and its partner OncoC4 released data from the PRESERVE-003 study of Gotistobart, evaluating the treatment in previously treated squamous non-small cell lung cancer. First-stage results showed a median overall survival of 18.5 months, compared with 10.0 months under standard chemotherapy. Advances in novel cancer therapies are viewed as a central pillar of the company's future pipeline.

Even so, the combination of job cuts, leadership flux and legal exposure has kept investors on the sidelines. Until reliable signals emerge from clinical research and the courtroom questions are settled, the overhaul is likely to remain the dominant force shaping how the company is valued.
