The European Commission has authorised BioNTech and Pfizer’s updated Covid-19 vaccine for the 2026/2027 season, targeting the XFG variant of the JN.1 lineage. The approval covers everyone aged six months and older across all 27 EU member states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Yet the market barely blinked.

BioNTech’s shares edged down 0.25 percent to €81.10 on the day, hovering just above their 50-day moving average of €79.70 but still nearly four percent below the 200-day average of €84.43. The muted response is telling. Regulatory green lights for seasonal Covid shots have become routine affairs, with historical data showing such announcements typically nudge the stock lower rather than higher. Investors now treat them as procedural noise, not catalysts.

Production is already underway. Pfizer and BioNTech began manufacturing the updated formula at their own risk before the formal approval, aiming to have doses ready for the upcoming respiratory season. The companies have now shipped more than five billion doses of their jointly developed vaccine worldwide. Clinical and real-world data, they say, demonstrate strong immune responses against multiple circulating variants including XFG, XFG.1.1, NB.1.8.1, PQ.17 and PQ.2.8.1.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

The real focus, however, is shifting elsewhere. BioNTech’s vaccine franchise, once the engine of its meteoric rise, is now viewed by the market as a stable but declining revenue stream. The narrative has pivoted decisively toward oncology. Several drug candidates are in Phase II trials: BNT116 for advanced non-small cell lung cancer, BNT326/YL202 for solid tumours and advanced breast cancer, autogene cevumeran for colorectal cancer, and gotistobart for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. The pipeline’s progress will be scrutinised when BioNTech reports second-quarter earnings on August 4.

That date looms large. Analysts remain broadly bullish — the majority rate the stock a buy, with virtually no sell recommendations — but the share price tells a more cautious story. At €81.10, BioNTech trades well below its 52-week high of €105.80 set in January, though it has recovered from the March trough of €68.35. The relative strength index sits at 52.8, signalling neutral territory with no clear directional bias.

A $1 billion share buyback programme, covering the Nasdaq-listed ADS shares, is running from June 8, 2026 to May 6, 2027 and funded from existing cash reserves. That provides a floor of sorts, but the next meaningful move likely depends on earnings and oncology data, not another seasonal vaccine update.

The stock’s technical position underscores the waiting game. It is sandwiched between its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, lacking momentum in either direction. For a company that once delivered triple-digit returns on the back of pandemic-era vaccine sales, the current inertia reflects a fundamental transition. BioNTech is no longer a one-product story, but it has yet to prove its next act can match the first.
