BioNTech has been putting its cash to work on two fronts at once: buying back its own stock and reshuffling who pays for its pipeline. The Mainz-based company reported on Tuesday that it had repurchased 5,037,452 ADSs through September 30, spending $463.3 million in total — a figure it booked as EUR 403.5 million. The buyback authorization, worth up to $1.0 billion, runs until May 6, 2027.

The repurchase disclosure came alongside third-quarter 2026 results that showed revenue of EUR 1,289.2 million, down from EUR 1,518.9 million a year earlier. BioNTech pinned the decline on softer demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Net profit for the quarter reached EUR 184.5 million, though the nine-month tally still stands at a loss of EUR 1,168.2 million.

A Raised Floor, a Wider Range

Management lifted the lower end of its 2026 revenue guidance, narrowing the expected range to EUR 1.7 billion to EUR 1.9 billion from a prior EUR 1.6 billion to EUR 1.9 billion. The company also reported cash, cash equivalents and securities investments of EUR 16.2 billion as of September 30 — a war chest that gives it room to keep funding development even as the top line comes under pressure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

That financial flexibility matters because the clinical ledger is sending mixed signals. Roughly two weeks ago, BioNTech and DualityBio released initial Phase 3 results from the global DYNASTY-Breast02 trial, which tested trastuzumab pamirtecan in HR+/HER2-low metastatic breast cancer. By the partners' own assessment, the available efficacy and safety data pointed to a limited potential benefit for the treatment.

Roche Picks Up the Tab

On the collaboration side, BioNTech disclosed a change in its arrangement with Roche/Genentech. The company exercised a contractual option under which future research and development costs for the program will fall to Roche/Genentech starting January 1, 2027. BioNTech retains the right to royalties should development and commercialization succeed.

A second breast cancer effort is moving in a different direction. Reuters reported roughly two weeks ago that BioNTech's pumitamig will be tested in combination with Gilead's Trodelvy in a Phase 3 study in advanced triple-negative breast cancer. BioNTech is set to sponsor and lead the trial, with Gilead supplying Trodelvy.

The stock was down 4.8% on Tuesday, extending a rough stretch — shares fell 5.1% in the prior session. For investors, the question is how far EUR 16.2 billion in liquidity and a raised revenue floor can carry a pipeline whose individual programs still have to prove themselves one trial at a time.
