BioNTech has quietly redrawn the cost map of its partnership with Roche and Genentech. Starting January 1, 2027, future research and development spending on the collaboration program will shift to Roche and Genentech as a matter of principle, the German biotech said Tuesday alongside its quarterly report. BioNTech keeps its entitlement to licensing payments, but only if development and commercialization pan out — the money is tied to the program's success, not to the calendar.

That disclosure landed in the same announcement that carried a profitable quarter. BioNTech posted revenue of EUR 1.29 billion (EUR 1,289.2 million) for the third quarter of 2026 and a net profit of EUR 184.5 million, a result that beat expectations. The company also nudged up the floor of its full-year revenue guidance, lifting the low end to EUR 1.7 billion from EUR 1.6 billion while leaving the ceiling at EUR 1.9 billion. The midpoint of the range rose accordingly.

Buybacks Put Real Money Behind the Capital-Allocation Talk

Shareholder returns got a concrete number too. Through September 30, BioNTech had repurchased its own ADSs for USD 463.3 million, a figure it valued at EUR 403.5 million. The program permits purchases of up to USD 1.0 billion and runs until May 6, 2027, leaving room for further action. The buyback reads as a shareholder-friendly use of capital — provided the company keeps enough headroom for its clinical work, which is where the real test lies.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

Investors pushed the stock up 2.3% on Friday. Media reports linked the gain to a broader lift across the sector, with Moderna also advancing after its own quarterly figures and a raised outlook.

A Phase-3 Win, With a Measured Caveat

On the pipeline side, BioNTech reported that trastuzumab pamirtecan met the primary endpoint of the Phase 3 DYNASTY-Breast02 study in HR-positive, HER2-low metastatic breast cancer. Against physician's choice of chemotherapy, the improvement in progression-free survival was statistically significant — but only moderate in magnitude.

Separately, roughly two weeks earlier, BioNTech struck a study collaboration and supply agreement with Gilead Sciences. The pair will evaluate pumitamig in combination with sacituzumab govitecan in a planned global Phase 3 trial for first-line treatment of triple-negative breast cancer. The start of that study remains subject to regulatory approval.

What Has to Hold Together

Executed buybacks and a profitable quarter give the story a tangible foundation. Whether that capital policy keeps convincing depends on operating earnings and clinical progress carrying the weight together — the standard BioNTech should expect to be judged against.
