Bernstein Cuts Krones to Neutral, Questioning the Packaging Giant's 2028 Revenue Ambitions

Bernstein cut Krones to Market-Perform with a EUR 111 target, citing softer 2027 growth and risk to the 2028 sales goal; shares fell 3.9%.

Krones shares came under pressure Wednesday after Bernstein Research turned cautious on the German filling and packaging equipment maker, downgrading the stock from "Outperform" to "Market-Perform" and setting a price target of EUR 111.00. The MDAX-listed stock fell 3.9% to EUR 107.80, placing it among the session's weaker performers. A second reading later in the day showed the shares down 2.1% at EUR 109.80, still hovering just below Bernstein's target.

At the heart of the downgrade is analyst Benjamin Thielmann's view that Krones' revenue and order growth outlook for 2027 looks more subdued than previously hoped — and that the company's official 2028 sales target may now be at risk.

A Capital Spending Pause Across the Beverage Chain

Thielmann's caution rests on current investment budget data from beverage producers and bottlers, who are holding back on new project approvals amid persistently elevated cost pressures. The restraint is particularly pronounced in the Asia-Pacific region, a key growth market for the Neutraubling-based group. When international beverage majors postpone or stretch out large-scale projects, the knock-on effect on equipment makers' order intake is immediate.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Krones?

The broader industry mood reinforces that picture. A survey by trade body spiritsEUROPE found that 60% of European spirits producers rate the general business environment of the past twelve months as having worsened, while only just under a third intend to raise investments next year. Brewers face their own squeeze, with rising costs, consumer inflation and declining volumes forcing many drink makers into cost discipline. For suppliers like Krones, that translates into more deliberate decision-making on major orders and capacity expansions.

Breaking Ranks With a Bullish Consensus

Bernstein's neutral stance cuts against a predominantly positive analyst consensus. In July and August, houses including Jefferies, Berenberg, Deutsche Bank and DZ Bank had all recommended the stock as a buy. The more cautious call lands on a share price that has already been struggling: Krones is down 20% since the start of the year, with the second reading putting the year-to-date decline at 19%. After years in which the sector benefited from catch-up effects and the shift toward sustainable packaging formats, customer spending discipline has moved back to the center of investors' attention.

Solid Operating Base, Softer Horizon

The downbeat medium-term view contrasts with a fundamentally stable operating picture. In the second quarter of 2026, Krones generated revenue of EUR 1.34 billion, up from EUR 1.32 billion a year earlier, while earnings per share edged up to EUR 2.23 from EUR 2.21. For the full year 2026, market experts on average expect earnings per share of EUR 10.18 and a dividend increase to EUR 3.11, after EUR 2.80 per share was paid out for 2025. Internally, the company is pushing ahead with its own initiatives, pooling group-wide resources for digitalization and automation within the Krones.digital unit.

Whether Krones can defend its 2028 timetable will likely hinge on how order intake in Asia develops over the coming quarters — and on whether the beverage industry's investment pause proves temporary or becomes entrenched.
