BayWa's Grain Trading Crown Slips to Agravis as Creditors Weigh a Near-Total Write-Off

BayWa has lost its top spot in agricultural trading to rival Agravis, according to a Thursday media report — a shift that pulls investor attention back toward the company's core business at a moment when its financial restructuring has dominated the headlines.
The changing of the guard at the top of the sector's revenue table comes against a backdrop of falling grain prices, which have weighed on sales across the largest agricultural traders. That matters for interpretation: revenue figures in the sector reflect price levels as much as they do actual business volumes, so Agravis overtaking BayWa signals a reshuffled competitive ranking rather than a confirmed drop in tonnage or a definitive read on profitability.
For shareholders, the development adds a second lens alongside the balance-sheet overhaul. A stronger or weaker revenue position, on its own, neither proves nor disproves that a turnaround is working. Competitive standing and financial capacity need to be assessed separately, and the Agravis comparison offers a reference point — not a substitute for a full appraisal of BayWa's economic situation.
A Reporting Calendar That Stretches Into 2027
Concrete answers will have to wait. BayWa announced on 29 September that it will publish its annual financial report and group annual financial report for 2025 on 22 December. The group's half-year and Q2 report for 2026 is scheduled for 26 February 2027.
Those dates are the real test for investors. Only by reading revenue, earnings and financial position together can the operating trajectory be judged with any confidence.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BayWa?
The Hybrid Bond: 98% of Principal, No Compensation
Running in parallel is the restructuring of the former BayWa hybrid bond, which has drawn sharp criticism from the SdK shareholder association. Under the proposal, creditors would assign 98% of the nominal amount plus all accrued interest claims to a trustee — without compensation. This is not a deferral of payment timing; it is a sweeping waiver of claims, and that scope is precisely what makes the terms so consequential for bondholders.
A creditor vote on the restructuring runs from 12 to 14 October, according to media reports. The SdK has come out against the plan, putting the interests of bondholders front and center.
One attribution detail is essential: the voting documents concern Kronos EKS AG & Co. KG. The counter-motions and statements published in BayWa's investor relations download center on Thursday — including those from bondholder Michael Schmidt regarding Kronos — belong to that bond proceeding. They are not fresh operating announcements from the listed BayWa AG.
Why Bondholder Pain Isn't Shareholder Pain
That distinction cuts to the heart of how shareholders should read the situation. An intrusion into bondholders' claims does not equate to a change in shareholders' own rights. The SdK's criticism targets the proposed terms for the former hybrid bond, nothing more.
BayWa shares posted a daily move of -2.2% yesterday. No causal link to the criticism of the restructuring proposal can be drawn from that figure. The bond vote forms part of the financial backdrop, but on its own it does not explain the daily movement of the share price.
A Solar Sale, and Two Separate Questions
On the operating side, BayWa r.e. reported on 1 October the sale of the "Gresselgrund" solar project in Bavaria to iAccess Energy. The project has a capacity of 22 MWp — a transaction that concerns an entirely different matter than the creditor claims headed for a vote.
What emerges is a company facing two distinct valuation questions at once: its competitive position in agricultural trading, and the fallout from the financial restructuring. The gap behind Agravis addresses only the first, and only in part. The decisive inputs for a fuller picture remain the scheduled financial reports and the outcome of the creditor decision.
