Bayer's Innovation Argument Cuts Both Ways as UBS and JPMorgan Split on the Profit Line

Bayer spent Thursday arguing that Europe and the United Kingdom risk slipping further behind in the global agricultural race, pressing the case for farmers to get faster access to new tools. The intervention lands at an awkward moment for shareholders: the same week two major banks backed the stock, they disagreed sharply about what the coming quarter will actually deliver.

UBS reaffirmed its buy recommendation with a 62-euro price target, pointing to familiar weakness in the agricultural division alongside intact momentum in the pharmaceutical business and trends it considers healthy through 2026 and 2027. JPMorgan, by contrast, kept Bayer at "Overweight" but sketched a more uncomfortable near-term picture ahead of the quarterly figures. Analyst Richard Vosser expects revenue 2 percent above the consensus estimate — and EBITDA 6 percent below it.

That gap is the crux. More sales do not automatically translate into a proportionally stronger operating result, and the two calls, taken together, suggest the market should brace for exactly that divergence.

Pipeline News Arrives in Different Stages

The pharmaceutical headlines that underpin the bullish case are real, but they sit at very different points on the road to approval. Roughly a week ago, Bayer's wholly owned subsidiary Vividion began a global Phase II trial of VVD-214 in combination with pembrolizumab, dosing its first patient. The study covers previously untreated people with advanced MSI-H or dMMR colorectal cancer, with pembrolizumab alone as the comparator. Starting a trial expands the clinical development of the compound; it is not proof of efficacy from that study and bears no resemblance to an approval.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?

Finerenon, marketed by Bayer as Kerendia, has advanced further. About a week ago the US Food and Drug Administration accepted a supplemental marketing application for the treatment of chronic kidney disease without diabetes, based on positive Phase III results from the FIND-CKD study. Acceptance is a regulatory step, not a green light for the requested indication.

Production is expanding too. Roughly two weeks ago Bayer announced a $2.2 billion investment in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio — an announcement that should not be confused with money already spent.

The Farm Business Sets the Frame

Bayer's warning about EU and UK competitiveness belongs in the same analytical box: it is a strategic signal about the conditions under which agricultural innovation reaches users, not a new financial forecast. No specific order or additional earnings contribution can be derived from it. What it does do is sharpen the distinction UBS drew — progress in medicines does not by itself repair the agricultural business, and the bank's positive view does not assume that weakness has already been overcome.

Bayer at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For investors, the question is therefore twofold: which compounds are moving forward, and how the divisions perform in aggregate. The pipeline news supplies opportunity; the agricultural weakness UBS also flagged remains part of the valuation.

November 3 Is the Reckoning

Bayer publishes its quarterly statement for the third quarter of 2026 on November 3. That date offers the next concrete occasion to test the pharmaceutical momentum and the agricultural drag against each other — and to see whether Vosser's split forecast, revenue ahead and profit behind, holds up. Until then, the innovation argument and the earnings argument will keep running on separate tracks.
