Bayer Adds 600 US Jobs and a Second Finerenon Filing While Glyphosat Questions Stay Open

Bayer is running two very different playbooks at once. One builds factories; the other pushes molecules through regulators. On 2 October the German group unveiled plans to spend 2.2 billion US dollars on a new pharmaceutical production site in New Albany, Ohio, a facility expected to create roughly 600 jobs. Six days later, on 8 October, the US Food and Drug Administration accepted an additional application for finerenone, marketed as Kerendia, covering adults with chronic kidney disease who do not have diabetes.

Those two announcements sit at opposite ends of the pharmaceutical value chain, and investors would be wise not to blur them. A construction budget says nothing about whether a drug works, and a regulatory filing says nothing about whether a plant will ever run at capacity.

A filing, not an approval

The finerenone submission rests on the Phase III FIND-CKD trial. What Bayer secured on 8 October is procedural: the FDA has agreed to review the application. It has not granted the expanded label, and no revenue can be booked on the strength of a docket entry alone. The distinction matters because the same compound is moving through a separate track in Germany, where a decision concerns the treatment of heart failure. Same molecule, different patient populations, different regulators, different stages of the process.

For anyone trying to size up Bayer's pharma division, finerenone offers a tangible reference point. It does not, however, convert regulatory momentum into sales by itself. The gap between an accepted application and a commercial product is where most of the risk lives.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?

A first patient, not a result

Bayer's subsidiary Vividion Therapeutics reported a day earlier that the first patient had been dosed in a global Phase II study. The trial pairs the WRN inhibitor VVD-214 with pembrolizumab in previously untreated, advanced MSI-H or dMMR colorectal cancer. The significance lies in the shift toward first-line therapy — a setting where patients have not yet received prior treatment.

That is a study start, nothing more. No efficacy signal has been established for the combination, and the readout is years away. Still, it widens the development programme into a new treatment context, which is a different kind of milestone from the Ohio plant or the finerenone filing.

The legal overhang has not gone anywhere

Progress on the pipeline runs alongside substantial legal exposure. According to media reports on Wednesday, the 7.25 billion US dollar glyphosate settlement had not yet received approval. A glyphosate trial that opened in Missouri in late September was cited as a further burden. On top of that, the EPA's assessment of glyphosate is expected toward the end of 2026.

None of the finerenone news removes those uncertainties. What the drug filings provide is a standalone positive element for assessing operations — advances on one medicine set against unresolved courtroom questions. Investors should treat the two ledgers separately rather than letting one colour the other.

The calendar's next entry

Bayer will publish third-quarter 2026 results, along with accompanying material for investors and media, on 3 November. That date will add the next scheduled look at the business to a run of operational headlines that has so far offered concrete steps but no unified verdict on their economic contribution. Keeping research and production milestones apart from reported financials remains the central task.
