Bawag's PTSB Deal Hinges on Commitment, Not Price, as Analysts Turn Bullish
Published on 10/17/2026 at 17:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deBawag's agreed takeover of Permanent TSB and Axis Capital's reported interest in the Irish lender are two very different animals — and the gap between them matters more to investors than the headline price difference suggests. Axis was reported on 5 October to be weighing a possible cash offer of 3.20 euros per PTSB share, well above the 2.97 euros per share Bawag has agreed to pay. But PTSB said it has received no offer, and it dismissed Axis's statement as highly speculative and conditional.
That distinction — between a floated idea and a binding bid — sits at the heart of the current situation. A higher number on paper does not convert speculation into a competing offer, and the agreed Bawag transaction should not be treated as completed either. An agreement and a closing are separate stages of the process, so investors are best served by weighing price against commitment rather than reading the price gap as a new transaction level.
Regulator Sides With Bawag
The Irish Takeover Panel on Tuesday rejected complaints lodged by Axis Capital against Bawag's planned acquisition, with media reports indicating the body found no breach of Irish takeover rules. That ruling addresses the regulatory objections only; it does not settle the commercial question of whether a rival bid might yet emerge. Nor does it alter the terms Bawag has already agreed with PTSB.

Two Brokers, Two Higher Targets
Alongside the bid uncertainty, Bawag has drawn a pair of positive analyst updates. KBW's Hugo Cruz now carries a 190-euro price target with an "Outperform" rating, refreshed on Thursday. Oddo's Jovan Sikimic moved earlier in the week, lifting his target to 188 euros from 175.0 euros on Tuesday while keeping a "Buy" recommendation — or "Outperform," depending on the note.
Both calls are assessments of the Bawag equity, not endorsements of how the PTSB situation will resolve. Price targets are analyst expectations, not guaranteed future levels, and they offer no confirmation that Axis will formalise an offer. They also cannot explain the drivers behind any single move in the share price.
Q3 Print Lands October 19
The next confirmed company event is the release of third-quarter 2026 results on 19 October 2026, with a conference call scheduled for 10:00 CEST. CEO Anas Abuzaakouk and CFO Enver Sirucic are both set to take part.
That date gives investors a fresh basis for valuing the stock, but it leaves the two forces in play running on separate tracks. Analyst enthusiasm for Bawag does nothing to remove uncertainty over how the PTSB pursuit unfolds — and a possible rival offer, however loudly trailed, remains just that until PTSB confirms one has arrived.
