BASF Wins Plaudits for Jeep and Toyota Parts While Offloading Chile Resins Unit
Published on 11/06/2026 at 12:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deBASF is reshaping its portfolio on two fronts at once. The chemicals group has agreed to sell its Palatal business in Chile to ALTA Performance Materials, while three of its automotive component developments — including a composite tunnel reinforcement for the Jeep Grand Cherokee — have picked up SPE Automotive Innovation Awards. The share price slipped 2.2% on the day.
The Chilean transaction, announced today, covers the production of vinyl ester and unsaturated polyester resins at the Concón site. Customers span construction, mining, aquaculture, transport and industry. ALTA would gain its second production facility in Latin America once the deal closes. No purchase price or completion date was disclosed, so the financial impact on the group cannot yet be assessed.
Completion hinges on customary conditions and regulatory approvals, and until then the business remains with BASF. The company frames the divestment as part of its focus on core operations.
Award-Winning Parts Across Several Vehicle Platforms
The innovation honours, meanwhile, span a range of components and automotive partners. Alongside Stellantis and L&L Products, BASF received an SPE Automotive Innovation Award for the composite tunnel reinforcement used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Door handle bezels for the Ford Everest were also recognised, a development involving Ford and Supavut Thailand. On top of that came the SPE Automotive Innovation Grand Award, shared with Toyota and Vuteq, for the thermoplastic truck bed of the Toyota Tacoma.
For investors weighing the stock, the breadth of these applications — each serving a different function in the vehicle — offers a qualitative signal of BASF's application expertise. Whether they translate into earnings, however, is a separate question.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?
Third-Quarter Growth Sets the Benchmark
The financial backdrop is a solid one. In the third quarter of 2026, BASF posted revenue of EUR 16.4 billion and EBITDA before special items of EUR 1.6 billion. Sales climbed 14% year on year, while EBITDA before special items advanced 15%.
Higher prices drove most of the improvement, with volumes also rising on the back of the ramp-up at the Zhanjiang site in China. Cost programmes are contributing as well. Analysts detect signs of an economic bottoming-out, though they attach caveats about weak Chinese demand and expectations for the final quarter that may be too optimistic.
Roughly a week ago, BASF raised its earnings guidance once more. For 2026, the group now expects EBITDA before special items of at least EUR 7.4 billion, up from a previous floor of EUR 6.9 billion.
Analysts Flag a Demanding Fourth Quarter
That upgraded target sits alongside a more sceptical read on the near term. dpa-AFX reported on 28 October that Jefferies and JPMorgan judged BASF's fourth-quarter outlook to be below market expectations. Even an improved company forecast can run into lofty consensus hopes — a risk for the shares if operating momentum falls short.
The tension matters for how much weight the award wins deserve. A cautious stance would be warranted if the downbeat view of the closing quarter is borne out in the actual numbers. Confirmation of the raised full-year guidance, by contrast, would support the case that the higher earnings bar is within reach, provided the rest of the business pulls its weight.
A Busy Pipeline Beyond Chile
Other moving parts are in play. BASF is preparing a possible IPO of its Agricultural Solutions division in Frankfurt, with the unit to be ready by mid-2027; the segment has recently been weighed down by falling sales and a loss. The pursuit of Evonik also faces high hurdles after Evonik rejected the takeover offer about a week ago. The Palatal sale, by contrast, builds on an already agreed change of ownership and underpins the focus on core activities — assuming the closing conditions are met.
Investors have 23/24 November 2026 marked as the next date on the calendar. Until then, the task is to weigh product-level progress against the earnings target together. The awarded vehicle applications strengthen the optimistic case only to the extent that BASF can turn them, alongside the rest of its business, into lasting profitability.
