A technical fault halted operations at one of the steam crackers at BASF's main Ludwigshafen site, the company confirmed, with the disruption striking the northern section of the complex. Built-in safety systems responded as designed, and excess gas was flared off in a controlled burn. Steam crackers sit at the heart of petrochemical verbund sites, using intense heat to break down naphtha into ethylene, propylene and other fundamental building blocks.

The incident unfolded over the weekend, on the heels of a firm Friday close for the stock. BASF shares finished the session at EUR 52.96, up 0.7%, leaving the stock 5.9% above its 200-day moving average of EUR 50.01. Since the start of the year, the paper has gained 19%.

Unplanned stoppages at central plants always carry logistical and financial risk. At large integrated sites, though, well-rehearsed redundancy and safety mechanisms typically contain the knock-on effects on downstream production chains.

Pivot Toward Higher-Margin Technology

While the cracker work continues, BASF is steering its high-performance plastics toward electrical and electronic components. The group has named AI data centres and high-speed connectivity as key target markets, alongside applications in electric mobility — a push that opens the door to faster-growing technology sectors.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Product momentum is building on other fronts too. Early in October, BASF launched its GLYTHERMIN coolant platform for liquid-cooled data centres, with GLYTHERMIN DC PG 25 qualified as an NVIDIA DSX Ready Coolant. That positions the company to capture rising demand for heat-management solutions in modern server farms. On the sustainability side, two processes for recycling polyamide 6 have earned BASF industry awards for CO? efficiency and sustainability.

Analysts See Value, Investors See Clouds

Sentiment toward European chemicals remains mixed. Bernstein Research reiterated its "Outperform" rating on 14 October with a EUR 61 price target; analyst James Hooper, fresh from investor meetings in North America, reported largely cautious-to-negative views on European industrial and upstream chemicals. Parmantier & Cie. had already issued a buy recommendation with a EUR 59 target on 6 October.

Strategic options are adding to the debate. According to media reports, BASF is weighing a higher offer for Evonik after an initial bid was rejected, provided it is granted access to the books; the exploratory talks remain open. Roughly two weeks ago the group also continued its ongoing share buyback programme to support its capital structure.

October 28 Looms Large

Investor attention now shifts to operating performance. BASF publishes its quarterly statement for the third quarter of 2026 on 28 October at 7:00 a.m. CET. The report should shed light on demand in key customer industries and on how volatile raw-material and energy costs have left their mark on the Ludwigshafen group's books — and on how sharply weakness in the base chemicals business is feeding through to group earnings.
