BASF's Dual Bet on AI Cooling and Circular Plastics Faces October Reckoning
Published on 10/16/2026 at 20:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deBASF has picked up two industry accolades for its polyamide-6 recycling work, a reminder that Europe's largest chemicals producer is steadily reshaping its portfolio toward circular products even as the operating environment stays tough. The Ludwigshafen-based group took the MATERIALICA Award 2026 in the "CO? Efficiency" category and finished second at the Fakuma Innovation Award 2026 in the "Sustainability" segment.
The recognition lands alongside a broader push into higher-margin specialty applications, moving the company's center of gravity away from conventional base chemicals. High-performance materials tied directly to global growth markets such as artificial intelligence and electric mobility now sit closer to the heart of the strategy.
Cooling Fluids and Connectors for the AI Buildout
A key plank of that shift is the Ultrason portfolio. BASF has widened the range of these engineering plastics to cover electrical and electronic components—fiber-optic connectors, cable jacketing and parts used in thermal management. The primary end markets are equipment for AI data centers, high-speed telecommunications and e-mobility, fields propelled by heavy worldwide infrastructure spending.
Earlier this month the group launched GLYTHERMIN, a heat-transfer fluid built for liquid-cooled data centers and tailored to thermal-management requirements. At the SEPAWA congress in Berlin this week, BASF also presented new personal-care concepts geared to global beauty routines.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?
Recycling runs in parallel. In pilot projects, BASF worked with industrial partners including Mercedes-Benz, ZF and Pöppelmann K-TECH on recycling PA6 plastics into near-production automotive components. Bringing these processes to commercial scale will still require further development and ramp-up work.
Bernstein Stays Bullish, but Investor Mood Sours
Analyst views paint a mixed picture of the DAX-listed group. Sebastian Satz of Citi reaffirmed his "Buy" rating on October 9 with a price target of EUR 60.00. Bernstein Research followed on Wednesday with an "Outperform" call and a EUR 61.00 target, published after a series of investor meetings in North America. Bernstein analyst James Hooper nonetheless flagged persistently subdued sentiment toward European industrial and upstream chemicals.
Consolidation chatter is adding to the noise. At the end of September, BASF confirmed exploratory talks with RAG-Stiftung and Evonik Industries AG about a possible takeover of Evonik, while stressing that both the course and outcome of the discussions remain open. According to media reports, management kept the door open to a higher bid after an earlier offer was rejected, though no confirmed new bid has emerged. Political resistance from North Rhine-Westphalia's state government has also fueled debate, and the market has greeted the prospect of a deal with noticeable skepticism.
Third-Quarter Report Looms as the Next Catalyst
The shares changed hands at EUR 53.03 on Friday, up 0.8% on the day, within striking distance of their 52-week high of EUR 55.05 set in April. Since the start of the year the stock has gained 20%, and it currently trades roughly 3.5% below that peak.
Whether the gap closes in the coming weeks will hinge on fundamentals. Investors get their next hard data point on October 28, when BASF releases its third-quarter report at 07:00 CET. Margins in the traditional segments, demand trends and updates on strategic projects will all be in focus—along with early evidence of what the new business lines are contributing to the bottom line.
